wp.com vs wp.org and wp publishing app

  • Unknown's avatar

I have been trying hard to use the WP publishing app and also use Hootsuite to share and post items to my domain the is wp.org and self-hosted.
The wp app appears to use wp.com. When I try to use it to post to my wp.org, it doesn’t work.
How do I get these to merge so I am not posting twice?

The wp app looks convenient but it seems to be a different player.
    Please help.

    Hi Sue,

When I try to use it to post to my wp.org, it doesn’t work.

Just to check I’ve understood correctly — it sounds like you wish to manage a WordPress.org site (makingsenseofsecurity.com) through the WordPress.com app). Is that correct?

If you login as makingsenseofsecurity, that site should be listed in the app because it’s connected to your WordPress.com account (using the Jetpack plugin).

Come back to me if you have any questions.

    Hi Gemma,

    Thank you for the response.
Sort of…if I do have the JetPack p-i instaleld for wp.com, then it should post to wp.org with no problem, correct?

One area I was trying to use it was with Hootsuite. HS allows wp.com to be added. But it will not post to my site.

    Any thoughts?

What Jetpack does is to connect your self-hosted site, to a WordPress.com account, and allows you to manage content on the site through the WordPress.com web interface and the WordPress.com desktop app. Put differently, your self-hosted site will be listed in your WordPress.com account, but the site remains self-hosted.

HS allows wp.com to be added. But it will not post to my site.

If Hootsuite offers a specifically WordPress.com integration, that integration would be using the WordPress.com API, which is only available for WordPress.com sites. It likely won’t work with your self-hosted site even if you had that site connected to a WordPress.com account via Jetpack.

Looking at https://help.hootsuite.com/hc/en-us/articles/115009689728-Add-a-WordPress-blog Hootsuite supports both – for your site you’ll need to follow the WordPress.org process outlined there, not the WordPress.com one.

Thanks for the response. I shall give it a full try.

    WML!

  • Glad we could help!

I just thought I’d add there are some other considerations with scheduled posts, too (possibility for missed schedules, URL changes if the link you started with has a different date from the publish date, etc). So if you’re scheduling these posts to publish automatically and also publish via Hootsuite automatically at the same time, I’d recommend checking advice at https://wordpress.org/support as well.

    Good luck!
