WP Domain Reader Integration

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m about at that point where I am ready to alter my profile name, and purchase a domain.

When using the Reader or my notifications pane, I noticed that I cannot follow some users who are using a custom domain. Also, I have to ‘click to read more’ via the Reader on their posts.

Is this because they have a domain outside of the wp.com suite? As in, they brought over their own domain?

Also, will my current example.wordpress domain be rendered useless, or simply forward to the new .domain ?

    Hope this was somewhat clear.

Essentially, I am worried about losing community integration by upgrading to a custom domain.

  • Howdy –

Thanks for getting in touch with us about these questions.

If you see “click to read more” this means that the publisher of the post has added a more tag. By default you would just click on the posts from Reader to open the full post view.

When you add a custom domain that becomes the primary but it is attached to your .wordpress.com site address. Only you and us (staff) will really see that though under your account. When a visitor goes to your site they only see the custom domain.

The .wordpress.com site does work as a back up though and the site content will be available at both. However, if you try to go to the .wordpress.com site address in your browser it is going to automatically redirect to the custom domain.

More details about domains can be found in this guide: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

Give that a read and please reply back here with any other follow up questions. I’m happy to help!
