WP Domains

What is the practical difference between a domain, a site and an address?
If I have two separate blogs, can they each work in one domain?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi –

A domain is what you put in the address bar to reach a site. There are different extensions that you can use, and you’ve surely seen. example.com, example.org, example.net, example.ca –

A blog and a website are the same thing, just structured differently with how their content is displayed. Blogs are typically updated with posts on a consistent basis by one author. Websites are built with static information on pages.

Send me links to your current blogs so I can help you figure this out.

Thanks. Possibly I’m looking at it wrong, might be nothing to do with domains and addresses. It might just be a different theme I need.

What I’m looking for is a blog where content is separated into categories and that is what is seen on the home page – a separation.

I have set up categories and use them but how can the categories be separated in the blog’s presentation the same way as it appears in online magazines or newspapers?

For me, it doesn’t matter if it’s split into two columns or one category above a line and the rest below that line.

So when I publish a post I get to decide where it’s shown on the front page by its category, in one or other column – or above or below a certain line.

I’ve only seen blogs which mass everything together, regardless of category.

Can I try an image? Excuse the rough draft and don’t take the layout literally as there’s next to no aesthetic design gone into it but hopefully it explains the kind of thing I’m thinking of.

There are two parent categories- “Fun Stuff” and “Culture”, and this is an example of separation on the home page.

Linking the categories in to your menu on the site is one way to do this.

The page that the blogs publish on to does not need to be linked in to the menu. Basically, that would remain behind the scenes. Then, folks can click through your menu to see the different posts under each category.

Does that sound like what you’d like to achieve?

    Hi, thanks for replying.

I later thought it was a theme problem so posted on the theme forum and a member suggested a Shortcode fix on a Static Page and making the Static Page my Front Page.
The Shortcode groups the posts in category order first, publish date second, and limits the number of posts shown on the page for each category.
I haven’t tried it yet but it looks possible.

For someone inexpert at this, like me, it would be good to have a theme with the shortcode already in. :)

  • Yep, that’d be another option. My suggestion would be to maybe set up a test site and try things out to figure out which will be best for you.

Just go to My Sites > Domains > Add and register another free .wordpress.com address to your account.

    Okay, good idea.

    Thanks again.
