How do I switch my domain name from iPage to WordPress hosting?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’m totally confused and am hoping someone can answer these basic questions. I have a new site I purchased from a private party. Here are my goals…

    1. Registration, Hosting, site builder templates –> all in one place, one username so I can access and renew it without trying to manage multiple usernames, multiple hits on my credit card every month, etc. I want SIMPLE and easy.

    2. I need one email account that I can sync with my phone

Can WordPress do this or do I need to go elsewhere like Godaddy or something?

    Thanks
    Rob

@ronharrisart When you say “WordPress” be aware that it comes in two flavors. Here’s more about the differences between WordPressdotcom (where we are) and standalone WP: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

If you mean WordPressdotcom, it does not accept incoming domain transfers at this time. If you need to transfer your domain, do so with an accredited domain registrar.

Once you have done that, you can map your own domain to a WordPressdotcom site that you register. Here’s more info on domain mapping: https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

Let us know if you need more info about that.

@rrurban you’ll also want to read the Support guide to com-vs-org I linked to in my above reply @ronharrisart so you can make the best choice for your needs.

Is the site you purchased from a private party hosted here on WordPressdotcom or is it hosted elsewhere?

WordPressdotcom can offer simple, but there is a learning curve involved with lots of resources to assist. https://en.support.wordpress.com/start/

If you set up a domain here, you can add email either as a forward to an existing 3rd party mailbox or add email from external vendors. https://en.support.wordpress.com/add-email/

Payment for upgrade plans is annual. https://wordpress.com/pricing/

If you have additional questions, let us know.

Yes, I use worpress.com only. As I understand it …

Step 1 – register site somewhere else (not available at wordpress)
Step 2 – host site at wordpress or somewhere else (my choice)
Step 3 – map site to wordpress

So either way I slice it I’m going to have a separate registar. Sound about right?
    Thank you justjennifer

    1. While I said WordPressdotcom does not accept incoming domain transfers, you can register a new domain with WordPressdotcom. See here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/all-about-domains/

    2. If from the start you want to host your website somewhere else, it makes better sense to have both your domain registration and your site at the same provider.

However, if you register the domain here and want to use it with a different web hosting provider, you can do that too by updating your name servers in the domain dashboard here to point to your web hosting provider.

    3. Domain mapping here only if you register your domain with a different domain registrar and want to use that domain with your WordPressdotcom site.

    You’re welcome.

I purchased the domain name from iPage. If I want to register a new domain with WordPressdotcom, can I transfer my existing WordPress site (www.KathyTrageserGallery.net) to be hosted by WordPressdotcom without having to rebuild the site entirely?

Or is it simpler just to map the existing site to WordPressdotcom

    Thank you

Hello again. Mapping your domain here means that your site is hosted on WordPressdotcom and it’s the site you create here that would be visible to the public. However, site visitors will only see your custom domain URL, not the WordPressdotcom address.

As the site at KathyTrageserGallery.net is using the standalone WP (org) software, you can export your content from it and import it to your WordPressdotcom site. You’ll want to follow this guide: https://en.support.wordpress.com/coming-from-self-hosted/

Note that only your content, posts, pages, comments, media and the like, will come over. Any theme, CSS customizations, scripts, etc. will not.

Let us know if you have any other questions about that.
