WP is recommending I change my domain name. What occurs if I do?

  What happens to my posts if I change my domain name? If a reader clicks on to my current domain name, where are they sent? Are my posts automatically copied over if I change my domain name?

  Hi there!

  This will depend on the type of change your making. If you’re adding a custom domain to a WordPress.com site, your old links will redirect to your new domain with the same content showing. So, if you change your primary domain to michaelamaynard.com and go to this post:

  Some Of My Best Friends Are…. UPDATED

  You’ll be directed to:

  http://michaelamaynard.com/2014/05/20/some-of-my-best-friends-are/

  But this will only work when your name servers have been set to the following:

  NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
  NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
  NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

  If you don’t know how to do this, you’ll need to contact your registrar for assistance.

  Shawna – How long will it take for the cut over to occur? I tried changing the domain name, but then all links to the existing posts bounced.

  Since I’m using WordPress.com as the host for these posts, where would I change the name servers?

  DNS changes can take several hours to fully propagate, theoretically up to 72 hours, but usually much quicker. This will only work if your name servers are set up correctly though.

  In order to update the name servers of the domain michaelamaynard.com, you’ll need to login to your account with your registrar. It looks like this domain is registered through GoDaddy:

  http://who.is/whois/michaelamaynard.com

  This is probably a good place to start:

  http://support.godaddy.com/help/article/664/setting-nameservers-for-your-domain-names

  Once your name servers are all set, you can change the primary domain of your site through Store > My Domains.
