WP is saying my computer can be harmed if I don't upgrade IE
-
WP is giving me a red box on my dashboard that says to upgrade IE or my computer can be harmed.
1. Is it true that my computer can be harmed? If yes, is that just by using WP with an outdated version of IE?
2. When I go to upgrade, Microsoft says something about Windows 7. I’m assuming I also have to upgrade Windows? (I have XP)THANKS!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Gigi,
I don’t know if your computer would be harmed but wp.com has recommended that folk upgrade IE in order for blogs to display properly.

I doubt there is any harm to your computer if you don’t upgrade IE.
Should you decide to upgrade be prepared for bugs, some favorite websites may not work, etc. I upgraded to IE 9, 2 days later removed it -
IE 8.
Red box on dashboard reads:
You are using an insecure browser! It looks like you’re using an insecure version of Internet Explorer. Using an outdated browser makes your computer unsafe. For the best WordPress experience, please update your browser. Update Internet Explorer or learn how to browse happy.

Checking in… not sure what to do next. Do I download IE 9 and if yes, do I need to download anything else?
Thanks-

IE9 will only work on Vista or Windows 7. If you are still on XP, you will have to go with something like Firefox. IE8 is the latest version of IE that will work with XP.
As far as that goes though, you can click the “dismiss” button and not worry about it right now as IE8 isn’t really a problem.

Thanks. Two questions, if you can clarify. Thank you-
Of the three options, which is “safest” or best (if safe isn’t an issue)?
1. staying the same
2. Windows 7 and IE9
3. IE 8 and FirefoxAlso, when it says it’s not “safe,” what are they talking about?
-
Well, if you are on XP right now, it is highly unlikely you can upgrade to Windows 7 as the hardware requirements are so strict. It would likely take buying a new computer.
My suggestion would be to go with Firefox.
Are you on Windows XP?
-
Gigi mentioned in her first post that she’s on XP.
As a fellow XP user (also IE8 when I have to), I’ve been using Chrome for about a year and it just sings on my computer compared to FF5. Regardless, both are memory hogs so I don’t have too much open in the background when surfing.
Older browsers are less safe because they are more prone to malware attacks. XP is the most used of the Windows family of OS (by a hair over Win7), so support is still available but slowly going away.

I have Windows XP and IE 8.
1. I’m hearing SPath say Firefox and JJennifer saying Chrome. I”m hearing you both say to get rid of IE, correct?
2. Can someone tell me specifically how to change the name attached to my avatar.
Thank You

Note that changing the display name affects the byline that appears below posts in themes, but it does not affect your username in the forums or in past, already-published comments. To change your username, you can use the name change tool. However, please be careful as that type of change is permanent.
