WP not uploading graphic for custom header

    Hi there, smart folks,

I’m a new user, working with the Vigilance theme, and I’m having a problem with disappearing graphics.
First one: My custom header graphic.
I successfully uploaded a JPEG to use as my custom header when I began the blog, but yesterday the graphic disappeared.
I tried re-uploading the file (no luck), then tried re-naming and uploading the file (also no luck).
Both times WP would let me browse for the file, locate the file, & click “Upload.”
After clicking, however, the next screen (which should show the image & let me crop if need be) turns up blank.
However, WP *seems* to think the graphic is there – the line “Choose the part of the image you want to use as a header” still comes up, but there’s nothing else to see, much less crop.

I’ve checked a few forum discussions, and have made sure that the file size is the same as the previous file that loaded successfully, that I’ve re-named the file, and that the filename contains only alphanumerics.

If anyone has words of wisdom, I’d really appreciate it – and please let me know if I need to supply more info to help solve this…

    Ok – further info:

I’m using FireFox 2.0.0.20 on a Mac to edit my blog.

I just tried going through the steps to add my graphic again: re-name file, browse, locate, & re-upload file on Custom Header page, & then (even though no image came up to crop) clicking “Crop Header.” I went to the home page and saw no graphic at all.

But then I went to my partner’s PC and got onto the blog – the header shows up there, but the resolution is pretty bad, and there’s a black bar under the graphic that’s not part of the original art (an area created when I ‘cropped’ an image i couldn’t see?).

here’s the URL of the uncropped graphic that I need to use:

Hope this helps narrow down the issue…thanks!

Your blog is private so we will all get “access denied.”
In any case, this is a known problem:

Try resizing your image before you upload it to the precise dimensions of your theme’s header: for Vigilance it is 920 by 180.

The re-size (crop) function on the header up-loader is broken.

Also, give the re-uploaded file a new name. If you upload with the same name, wp will add a number after it and that gets confusing.

Sorry – fixed the Privacy settings. *slaps forehead*

Ok, got it – cropper doesn’t work on my Mac. I don’t have any useful image manipulation software, though (I know – how last decade). But I will get a friend to re-size it and try again. Thanks for the tip.

BTW – the cropper worked fine on my partner’s PC/Firefox. But the image quality was still super awful – even after renaming/reuploading file. Dunno why.

I’ll have to try this tomorrow – but I’ll consider the question answered. Thanks again!

Whether you have a Mac or not isn’t the issue. The crop feature is finicky for every browser and every system. I use it to crop and upload images in testing all the time and I’m on a Mac.

If you can, I would consider upgrading FF unless you are on 10.3.x in which case you are on the latest version you can use.
