wp-settings.php error. How do I update WP from a folder

  I have a very old WP site (2012) that stopped working and is giving me this message when I attempt to go to it.

  Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘new’ (T_NEW) in /home/publicad/www/www/nysat/wp-settings.php on line 204

  I think I just need to update WP but can anyone tell me how to update a WP site that I no longer have access to?

  I have the folder on my server but cant login.
