WP Stats is not identifying reliable traffic source. Is there a plugin?
-
I am on the Premium plan and I’m working on growing my site. My question is about WordPress.com’s Stats. Though it is nice to see that I’m getting traffic from Facebook, I’m getting traffic from unknown sources.
I do have two other site traffic trackers. The new Google Analytics and StatsCounter. Guess what I found out on StatsCounter? Yes, I’m getting steady traffic from a social media platform that I regularly post to. Why the heck is Xapit not showing up? What about some of the other not so popular sites?
Is there a plugin that would let WordPress Stats track these sites and let me know?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hey @barryb64,
The WordPress Stats only provides basic information.
As you are on a paid plan, you can integrate Google Analytics or something similar for more in-depth traffic statistics.https://wordpress.com/google/analytics/ should make it smoother for you.
You can also follow the steps listed at https://wordpress.com/support/google-analytics/ . Let me know if you have further questions. :)

For the second part. In google analytics, can you try checking the traffic acquisition section if you are using GA4?
First please go to Acquisition -> Traffic acquisition from your GA dashboard. Then at the bottom there will be a table showing traffic sources.
At the top of the table there’s a input field, type in
referraland press ‘enter. Now only one field(Referral) will be shown, and just below the input field, there should be a dropdown where you can chooseSession source`. You can then see the traffic sources.Does this help? Let me know if it works for you.
If you are using Universal Analytics, you can find it at Acquisition -> All Traffic -> Referrals.

Yes, I am using GA4. I converted over, a couple of weeks ago.
I followed your instruction and discovered a surprise. t.co better known as Twitter. Between StatsCounter and GA, I am learning that my site is doing better than I thought. Right now, I’m using the free version of StatsCounter.
As for Xapit, I didn’t see it. Although it may be labeld as Direct.

I don’t have knowledge about Xapit unfortunately so I can’t comment regarding that. They could be removing referrer header which would be shown as Direct source.

That is my assessment, too. No problem. Between the three, I have a much better idea of what is going on. Thanks again.
