WP.com and uploading OLD files?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have this old wordpress.com blog and had then used my own domain (not through wordpress) and moved everything over to it. When I access my old blog, there’s only one post pointing to my new domain (which I no longer have). It’s been over 3 years.

I do, however, have the old wordpress files that I had backed up. Is there any way I can get this old blog back up and running (domain excluded). How do I do this? Do I need to upgrade to a domain again to use FTP or something? The backed up files are from version 2.? So it’s old.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I flagged this for the staff to take a shot at it – do you also have the Export files or just the backup files?

My first thought is to say you need to install WordPress.ORG somewhere and copy the files to the server or PC (you can put WordPress.ORG on a PC) then do an export – but the staff might have a short cut – also if the files are way old they might need to be upgraded a time or three to get to the current version

Unfortunately I only have the backed up files… a folder called WordPress. This account that I’m currently on is where it all began.

I just created a new domain name. Do you think I’ll be able to upload the files this way and get it back up? Or do as you suggest and go to wordpress.org? But then again, I don’t have any export files. Ugh…. so confused.

I was requested to have this site resurrected to help another fearful flyer and I’m struggling to get it going.

You can’t upload the files you have to a blog here – the only direct hope is for the staff to convert the files for you – if they can’t then you will need to get help over at WordPress.ORG – sometimes the staff do some amazing things for bloggers here –

So lets keep calm for a few hours and see if the staff can help you – that would be the easiest – if they can’t then you will need to do an install of an old version of WordPress.ORG somewhere and upgrade the versions to one that will import here –

Ok thanks for your help. I’ll wait a while and see what transpires with the help from staff.

    @deesfirstflight: I hope I can help!

When you say you have a backup, do you mean you made a copy of your WordPress site folder through FTP, or did you request a site backup from your webhost?

With WordPress, all posts and content aren’t stored in the files/folders under your WordPress site folder – they’re saved in a MySQL database, which is separate from your site folder. If you had a backup of your database file, it would have an extension of .sql.

Here’s more information on backing up a self-hosted database if that might help jog your memory on how you backed up your old site:

If you do have it, please let me know and I can send you an email where you can attach that file and we can take a look.

If you don’t have the database file, there’s not much else we can do.

Let me know if you have any questions.
