wp.com export failure w/ 0mb xml file (large site)
-
Please help. I have checked other threads regarding “Empty Export File”, etc, etc.
They allude to the size of the wp.org site (large) resulting in a timeout and editing files to resolve this. However… IMPORTANT: This is an export from a wp.COM site at gamemoir.wordpress.com.
Only documentation I can find recommends disabling plugins or going to a vanilla theme prior to trying the export.
WP.com asserts that on the IMPORT side, your host might have an issue with a large XML file being imported. But I can’t generate the large one the above listed site probably will create.
I have done that and the following steps:
-I’m in Safari… Tried in Firefox.
-Disabled a Premium Theme for a “vanilla” one.
-Looked for other items or plugins I could disable.
-Resulting Export files are all 0mb and empty when pulled into text viewer. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I think I figured it out on my own.
I exported the site’s aggregate contents in chunks, then imported each xml file sequentially.
In other words, I did “pages”, “feedback”, then “posts” but when I got to posts (the huge portion of content on the site) I broke the exports down into three month periods, dating back to the creation of the wp.com site.
Essentially, each XML file came out pretty substantial but was able to be handled on the export and import side. (wp.org, self-hosted site)
Please note you will need to either re-create authors or select a default author for your posts to have associated authors on the import side.
I hope my struggles might help others.

Hello there,
Please try the instructions from here and see if the export works as it is intended to. Usually the exported xml file will contain only the content with the formatting only. The media files have to be downloaded separately.Feel free to get in touch if you still have issues.

Actually, simplysaru, In the new versions of the IMPORT and EXPORT tool provided by wp.com themselves, the media files (photo only) can be selected for IMPORT via a check box.
See below for their documentation that clearly states this:
