WP.com not WP.org – Part 2

    How about this:

If their username is not linked to their blogs, we could tell them something like:

“Would you please give us your blog address? You may want to consider linking your username to your blog as explained on the ‘8 Things… ‘ stiky.”

If they come back and give us a .org blog, then we could tell them (just so not to seem rude):

“A staff memeber will be notified, please be patient.”

Then modlook the thread and let them deal with it.

    What do you guys think?

    I need to type faster…

I would also suggest that if other members continue to give the org link, we give them the link to this thread.

I think that’s a good idea, that way they’ll get informed too.

  • Unknown's avatar

This is kind of funny that we or you guys should even have to think about this, honestly I was just going to ignore them and let them know that silence is a sign that we can’t help them.
I like the just using the modlook and .org tag. Directing them to this link would still technically be help .org-ers and technically enabling the WP staff from doing anything.

Good point, tsp. They have been removing the modlook tags once they have been reviewed. I wonder if they will leave the WP.org tag alone? Or are we going to have to go back and re-tag them?

As to your other question – I think you – and we all – should do as much or as little as we feel comfortable with. I often just put the link in to “The difference” sticky and leave it at that.

devlog – what aw was saying before was addressed in this comment https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/wpcom-not-wporg?replies=88#post-256520 and one a couple spaces down and another a couple of comments down from that.

I have to say that I had high hopes for a solution to this problem based on Mark’s comments in that thread.

  • Unknown's avatar

Talk about needing to type faster ….

  • Unknown's avatar

    I like devblog’s response.

  • Unknown's avatar

I just read back through Mark’s responses in the other thread, and my hope is that they have seen this one and have pushed this up higher on the priority list. That said, I’m still on board for this.

  • Unknown's avatar

FWIW I won’t be modlooking these types of re-directs to worpress.org I will simply supply the links required and go on about my merry way.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I see, Vivian. Thanks.

BTW, I believe that I’m addressing the “drawbacks” Mark’s talking about in that thread. I mean, even if a user doesn’t have a blog linked to their username, or if he/she has more than one blog, or even if they have domain mapping, the wp guys have to know a way to tell that that person has a blog hosted here. They just need to query the DB and that’s all. Just like they do when a user logs in. They need to query the DB, match the username and password and grant access to the account, list all your blogs in your admin bar, etc. The way I see it, it’d be relatively simple. The database returns 0 rows, the user doesn’t have a blog… act accordingly.

The other thing to remember, is that many of these .ORG bloggers could be using Akismet and/or the Stats plugins which means they may very well have a blog here, just not used, so they could supply the URL of that unused blog which could complicate things.

  • Unknown's avatar

and my hope is that they have seen this one and have pushed this up higher on the priority list.

Just don’t hold your breath or you could turn into a smurf. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

I held my breath once and still haven’t recovered completely.

  • Unknown's avatar

tsp – I have seen the Akismet questions we’ve been getting. Support has set up a specific link for dealing with those questions http://akismet.com/contact/

Vivian, what I’m saying is that they can use their wordpress.COM account to try and get help here. I’ve been involved in at least three of those cases, and one of the people came back three times. I had remembered the username, so I could head him off. The only reason I knew he was asking about a .ORG blog in the first place is because I have one and could tell by the way he was asking the questions.

  • Unknown's avatar

Hahahah I think just leaving the modlook and wp.org tag works, case in point https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/posts-page-not-picking-up-css?replies=2

You know when I woke up this morning, and after receiving an email from a kind friend, I’ve decided that if I start an answer and then find out someone is in the wrong forum (whether asking them for their blog URL, or just knowing from what they originally posted) I’m going to politely send them in the right direction and tag the thread wp.org so that staff hopefully can see that this is a real problem and not that we are all just whiners.

I’m a volunteer here, and as such I can either answer questions or not. It’s my choice and no one is forcing me. I can answer the threads I want to and not answer the ones I don’t.

Many who come here looking for help with .ORG blogs simply do not know the difference between .ORG and .COM and the fact that the only difference in the URL’s is .COM and .ORG, makes things even more confusing. It’s an honest mistake in most cases and I’m not going to ignore them for what very well could be a very innocent mistake.

As I said, I’ll tag them wp.org. I won’t tag them modlook, because that could very well muck things up and keep those who really need staff help from getting it in a timely manner.

Sorry for the about face. I probably should not have gone to sleep last night. ;-P
