WP.com not WP.org – Part 2

Yeah, sorry for the mess earlier.
I don’t think this will alleviate all of the problem, but it should help quite a lot. Sorry it wasn’t addressed earlier and thanks for pushing the point.

Would it be possible to set it so that they HAVE to choose a blog or the ‘need to ask a question about wp.com’ option? I’ve seen a couple already where they actually do have a wordpress.com blog, they just haven’t bothered putting it in the box and so then they get the automated response when it’s not really appropriate. Like here, for instance, and here. Or, actually, maybe the automated message could just be changed slightly so that it asks people who do have a wordpress.com blog to give the url of their blog, so that we can see how to help them. As well as keeping the links to the .org forums and so on.
Thanks!

May I suggest that you add one more item to the ddl?
You see, having the option “None, this is a topic about using WordPress.com” may still lead people with self-hosted blogs to post here. I mean, they won’t “notice” the “.com” bit and may still post here. So, how about if you add another item that would read “I’m hosting my blog myself” or “None. I downloaded the wordpress software myself” or something like that, and setting the “onchange” event to redirect the person to the auto reply.
-
Making a selection mandatory is probably a good idea. I’ll have to do that tomorrow though.

I’m excited. This will save us much time. But I’m wondering if we could give the autopost a unique username, like Autopost, so that we can look at the front page of the forums and skip all threads where Autopost posted last? Because the OP has to give more information before we can proceed anyway; all threads ending with Autopost posts are ignorable. Does that make sense?
-
I thought of that but was shortcutting to get the feature out the door. I’ll have another look.
-
Mind you as shown here, the “human” face on the auto-reply seems to prompt people to explain themselves.

Okay, but how about a human name that’s different from your staff posting one, even if just in capitalization or spacing? Just so we can identify those threads easily.
-
and what about my suggestion above? would something like that be possible or is it just not plausible?
-
The way the form works, they choose a WP.com blog from the drop-down menu listing all their wp.com blogs, but it does not then show up in the post. That’s a problem.
-
-
I just checked – and I see that it is on all the forums. How hard would it be to append the blog address to the question?
-
Agreed. It could come up under the username, so it isn’t in the main post, looking exploitative.
-
The drop down option menu to pick a URL has this little line that you can
pick as a option which will not help in figuring out what website their
referring to if they chose this option. Here’s a Screen Shot -
And the only reward I need for suggesting this option is an all-expenses-paid trip to WordCamp SF 2009. (Of course, willing to concede if someone else suggested it first. As I’ve said, I’ve been out of the loop.)
Even if it’s not perfect, it’s a great step in the right direction. Now if we could just catch the spammers somehow…
