WP.com not WP.org

@rain, Vivian- Granted I haven’t been around the forums as long as some, but overall it seems to me that the number of ORG users posting here is on the rise irrespective of COM posters. (Besides, it’s probably the calm before the 2.7 storm. ;) ) There also seems to be a large number of abandoned threads where I’m assuming the OP realizes they’ve asked in the wrong support forum. Those aren’t being tagged. Maybe we should mark those somehow as well.

@teck07- again thanks, it is nice to know that one’s efforts are appreciated. :) At the same time it is tiring to repeat “Sorry, you seem to be in the wrong forum”. :(

It’s kinda nice to have a break before the storm hits because when 2.7 releases
the dashboard will be revamped & blogger’s will be posting like crazy. (Remember 2.5
how crazy it was here in the forums. Also some of are answers won’t apply once the
new dashboard comes out so we will have allot of re learning on our hands.

Grrrr. Various people, including raincoaster, have just spent the best part of an hour trying to help with a query about embedding a slideshow, only to discover at the end of it all that the OP is using a wordpress.org blog. She’s wasting her time AND the volunteers’ time. PLEASE can we do something about this!

  • Unknown's avatar

I underestimated. It was actually an hour and a half in total.

  • Unknown's avatar

Until we get this taken care of, may I make a suggestion? Do NOT answer a question if the poster has not provided a link to their wordpress.COM blog. It’s what I’ve been doing.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I agree with vivian,

I always ask for the wp.com link 1. If there username isn’t linked
& 2. If there user name is linked to something else other then there
    blog.

Going that route asking them for there link will help you out as well as
    the other forum forum volunteers.

Because if the op responded you can drop in & see if there hosted here
& if another volunteer drops by before you can they can see right of the
bat that there hosted here or not saving them time to be able to move on &
    help some one else.

If the op refuses to provide the link then simply direct them to support.

Because there has been allot of the same replies going out for the basic
answers I created a test blog were I test issues there having as well I created
a book mark page because it gets tire some to keep writing the same answer out
through out the day plus it also saves time to just copy & paste those basic answers.

Feel free to use theses bookmarked answers if you would like
Please not the page is bookmarked in random order & I’m working
on organizing the book mark page. Checkout->Forum Bookmark

I was doing exactly that, Vivian. And twice some moran tore into me with the “why dont’ you provide help don’t you realize how important I am? Too important to answer questions from the likes of you, serf” thing which, quite naturally, resulted in responses from me which somehow seem to be missing in the forum nowadays if you search for them.

Still, it’s fun, so maybe I’ll try that again.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yeah, I’ve gotten some of those, too. No matter – I just don’t answer without a link.

  • Unknown's avatar

Coming back to my above point about threads that are abandoned, where the OP doesn’t have a WP.com link either in their username or in their question, do you think we should be marking those wp.org as well?

    (@Mark-you’ve trimmed your beard.)

  • Unknown's avatar

I don’t know. I’ve only been marking threads as WP.org when I are sure that the question is from someone over there. I have used WP.org? (with a question mark) for some cases but not many.

  • Unknown's avatar

I generally mark the threads as WP.org as soon as there’s some indication that the question is either from a WP.org user or someone who is confused (e.g. trying to add a WP.org plugin to a WP.com blog). If they just abandon the thread but it’s not clear, I don’t tag it because there are plenty of WP.com users who never reply either.

  • Unknown's avatar

I don’t do anything on the abandoned threads, either. My use of the WP.org? is limited to when someone asks a question that includes the language of wp.org (like plugins or php) but really hasn’t given enough info for us to tell. But like I said, I use that pretty sparingly.

  • Unknown's avatar

I just marked two more new threads as ORG questions.

It’s been three weeks since rosclarke started this thread and there have been about 156 threads started by confused ORG users. Shortly after this thread was started a glimmer of hope was given by WordPress.COM Staff that something was in the works, but nothing since then.

(And with all due respect, as long as COM Staff continue to answer ORG questions in the COM forum, the confusion will most likely continue. Just saying’…. )

  • Unknown's avatar

And I just marked two more. And I agree, jennifer. They should be directing folks to the proper forum, not answering their questions.

  • Unknown's avatar

(sighing in a small voice from the back seat of the car) are we there yet?

  • Unknown's avatar

Can we at least get an update on the status of this?

  • Unknown's avatar

wp.ORG users trying to answer questions in wp.COM forums doesn’t help at all.

  • Unknown's avatar

    uhm… I’m a wp.ORG user…

  • Unknown's avatar

It’s all right, we love you anyway.

  • Unknown's avatar

There is an exception for you, devblog :) And perhaps I should have phrased that differently, especially since we’ve got some volunteers who have extensive experience on both platforms.

(Heck, I’m a WP.ORG user now myself, albeit a real newbie.)
