wp.com posts prev. exported to wp.org site showing up again, domain mapping, mor

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi, for a # of years, I had a wordpress.com site (link above), at some point, I put domain mapping on the site and it linked to a URL (washingtonsquareparkblog.com). About two years ago, I switched over to wordpress.org, exported ALL the posts from the wordpress.com site to it and all seemed fine. I did notice that my domain mapping continued for awhile (maybe I am wrong but it seemed to be the case) without my renewing.

    At some point, it was clear that the domain mapping went off. I am not sure when this began happening but now, some of the posts, instead of showing up in the wp.org site via the (newer) URL, if you click on them in the wp.org site, they go back to the wp.com site which has a whole different look.

    In addition, I went to great lengths to get the new URL up and running with the domain mapping so that it would show up strong in google searches. And for years it was fine. But now, somehow the wordpress.com site is showing up higher than the wordpress.org site which has taken a major tumble in ranking.

    Earlier this year, I thought … well let me put domain mapping back on. So I paid for domain mapping not realizing until afterwards that that is not what I needed. It is not possible I guess since the URL (washingtonsquareparkblog.com) is already a stand alone site. I did not see anything about the option of a 30 day refund when I signed up and pretty immediately I realized that this was not what I needed. Because I did not know a refund was an option after clicking around a bit after 30 days, I did not do so.

    This is causing me a lot of stress. I cannot pay someone right now to figure it out and I dont know what to do. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

    @cathrynbe

    You’ve reached support for the free blogs hosted at WordPress.com. The site you’ve indicated, washingtonsquareparkblog.com, is running a self-hosted/installed version of WordPress (using the free WordPress.org software).

    To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities. You can read more about that here:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

    Since your site is self-hosted with a different provider, support staff at WordPress.com do not have access to your site’s files or the ability to provide support for it.

    You can find support for your self-hosted WordPress site here:

    http://wordpress.org/support/

    http://codex.wordpress.org/

    You may also wish to contact your host’s support team for more assistance.

    Since you no longer need it, I’ve removed the Domain Mapping Upgrade for washingtonsquareparkblog.com, to avoid any confusion.

    If I’ve misunderstood the issue, or if you have any other questions, please let me know.

    Hi, yes, you misunderstood because something changed since I last wrote. I do understood the distinction. The only reason you are seeing the self-hosted blog vs. the wordpress.com site is because I wrote to help @ wordpress.com yesterday and they told me how to redirect the site to show at the self-hosted URL vs. washingtonsquarepark.wordpress.com under Domain Mapping (something that it did not seem to allow me to do initially).

    I see that it is still redirecting but I do want to mess things up again.

    The WP.com help person told me this:

    ”When the domain mapping expired, the WordPress.com site became accessible in its regular .wordpress.com, thus making it open to search engines and users. The best course of action is to either continue domain mapping, or simply mark the site private so that the WordPress.com URLs do not show up on Google again.

    In this case, I believe it’s best to keep the domain mapping active so that Google eventually recognizes the URLs (both direct .com and .wordpress.com) load up the same site and removes the duplicate results. When that happens, you can safely mark your WordPress.com site as private.”

    I think i need to keep it as it was set up before ? with the Domain Mapping on

    Thanks.

    @cathrynbe

    If a custom domain is not going to point towards a site hosted at WordPress.com, then it is best to remove the Domain Mapping Upgrade.

    The domain washingtonsquareparkblog.com is not registered with WordPress.com, and, as previously stated, it is not associated with a WordPress.com site.

    I can only assist you with WordPress.com sites. Are you having an issue with a WordPress.com site? If so, what is the address of the site and what is the nature of the issue?

    Once you give me some additional clarification, I will be more than happy to continue addressing your issue.

    I am sorry but I am really unclear on what you are saying. I have a wordpress.com site. Can you please put my situation back as it was before? You sound very hostile and I do not appreciate it. My first post outlined exactly the specifics and I am not sure if you do not understand but you have everything wrong. Please change it back and I will work with the help desk. This is pretty outrageous *support*.

  • Unknown's avatar

    It IS associated with a wordpress.com site. Please do not change something without asking a person – who is trying to get *help* – first.

    Hi @cathrynbe, your base WordPress.com site, https://washingtonsquarepark.wordpress.com/ , is still live on the internet. Since you have moved to a self-hosted installation, I would suggest going to Settings > Reading and under Site Visibility, choose I would like my site to be private, visible only to myself and users I choose and then click save at the bottom of that page. This will take your old site here off of the internet and public view.

    I’ll mention that it can take the search engines up to a few months to remove a site from their indexes. Bing and Google both have removal which you can use if you have their Webmaster accounts. You can search for Google Removal Tool and Bing Removal Tool to find information on doing that.

    @cathrynbe

    The Site Redirect Upgrade is the Upgrade for directing traffic from a WordPress.com site to a site hosted elsewhere. You can read more about it here:

    Site Redirect

    This Upgrade has been added to washingtonsquarepark.wordpress.com and is directing traffic to http://www.washingtonsquareparkblog.com:

    https://washingtonsquarepark.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=my-upgrades

    If there is anything else you need assistance with, please let us know.

    Hi @sacredpath – thanks for that information. It seems worth leaving the site redirect going (which is what it was switched to) and then ultimately I will set it to private. Good to know about removal from google and bing.

    thank you!

    @pmciano – thank you. I was in contact with the help@wordpress and they explained this to me also and you all made the change.

    thanks.
