WP.org Themes for WP.com Hosted Site

  As of this morning, my blog http://www.foodandwinechickie.com is now hosted with Blue Host. I’ve read that one can use WP.org themes if one’s site is hosted outside of WP.com
  Is this correct? How?

  The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  You just download and install the theme you want to use. For support, please see http://wordpress.org/support/ . This is the Support forum for wordpress.COM not wordpress.ORG.

  I’m on wp.com…want to know if I can now use wp.org themes now that I’m hosted with Blue Host

  Well, having a domain registered with Bluehost doesn’t change anything. You are still hosted on wordpress.com. You can only use the themes available on wordpress.com.

  If your blog is physically hosted on bluehost (you exported all your posts from here and installed them at bluehost, then yes you can use any theme you want.

  If you just bought a domain name from bluehost, and have domain mapped it to your blog here, then as husdal said, your blog would still physically be hosted here at wordpress.COM and you cannot use external themes.

  I noticed there are some errors on your domain name setup. It lists:

  Domain servers in listed order:
  NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
  NS2.BLUEHOST.COM

  You either have to have both of them pointing at wordpress.COM, or both of them pointing at bluehost.

  Did you buy the hosting package at bluehost and then install and configure the wordpress software at bluehost?

  To be honest, I’m super frustrated with the whole transfer to BH. The ONLY reason I tried to moved (unsuccessfully as you point out) to BH was to be able to get a new theme.

  First thing you need to do is to correct the domain name servers wherever your domain name is registered so that that can correct and propagate through the internet name server system. Figure 24-72 hours although it is typically 24-48 – sometimes less.

  The latest version of the wordpress.ORG software allows you to upload new themes directly from within the dashboard although I’ve never tried it myself. Plugins and such can also be uploaded directly from within the dashboard as well. It does require that you input in the FTP information you received in your “welcome” email from bluehost into the dashboard so that wordpress can properly connect with your bluehost web account.

  Once you have corrected the name servers and they have propagated and stabilized, then you can transfer your stuff from here to the new blog as outlined here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org .
