“Write Post” features

I have been looking for a page that explains the various features as listed on the “Write Post” page because there are a few features I do not know how to use. But I haven’t found anything that lines up with what I have on my screen.

I did go to the page that was listed in the “Features List” (from the FAQ link) and when I clicked on the Spell Check link it loaded a page with a very different screen than what I see. I would love to have the spell check feature, but I don’t. I would also love to have little images that show what the tag is for rather than obscure (sometimes) letters. :) I would like to know how to center my text and do various style changes with the text itself (for example, underline and strike through).

I have a Mac and I use either Safari or Firefox. The screen I see on the “Write” page has these tags:
Bold [b], Itallic [i], Link, b-quote – these ones I know and some use often. Then there are the [img] and [lookup] tags which I know. However, what are these:
    [del]
    [ins]
    [ul]
    [ol]
    [li]
    [code]

I assume that [close tags] means to make all tags printed invalid, or it will close any open tags at the point of insertion.

I have played around a little with what these are but I've not come to any strong conclusions. I have used what I think works for the "strike through" style but it looks more like a date timestamp.

    Thanks for your help. :)

Safari is your problem, i’m afraid. Thanks for looking in the FAQ (since most people around here don’t seem to do that), but you missed this page:
    http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/20/im-using-safari-and-i-have-problems/

I use Firefox on my Mac with no problems.

You’re right, I didn’t see that page. I don’t often use the Safari here though, I use Firefox 95% of the time. Still I don’t have the same “Write Page” as was shown in the Spell Check page:
    http://wordpress.com/features/spell-check/

Still, even with Safari I don’t really have problems. I just don’t know what these other codes do and I’d like to know. :) That’s what I’m after at the moment. Heck, if there’s features available I might as well know how to use them, right?

    Thanks

The best and simple way to see what the icons are for and how they work is to check the FAQs. All the icons and their uses are listed here http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/15/what-do-all-the-icons-mean/
It’s also useful to post some text in a draft post and then manipulate it using the icons to gain some experience in advance of “diving in”.

i think you’re probably also looking for this:

    The editor has gone!

    Hmmm

It’s not that I can’t understand the icons. If there were icons that’d be different. It’s that the buttons contain letters and it seems that, for example [ins] is the code for underlining text. Why not the [ul] button? And when I do use the [ins] for underlining, within the tag code is what looks to be a date/timestamp. That makes no sense to me so I am unsure if I am using it correctly. But it serves my purpose for now and I haven’t found anywhere that it’s causing trouble. I have found this because I have done several “test” posts to see what these buttons and tags do. Many of them don’t show any change in the text or page, nothing.

And it’s not that the editor bar is gone either. It’s just not at all like what is shown in the link I posted above. I wish I could show you all an image of what I see. I’m going to the library this week when I head to town and I’ll see if it’s any different there, I’m sure it will be. Even still, I’d like to figure out what these tabs do. I listed all of them in my first message.

When you look at the write page, there is a space for the title and below it says “Post” with the editor bar. Below that is the text box. I’m talking about the editor bar between the text box and “Post”. What is listed above in the first message is what I have instead of the buttons with images. But for ease of reading, I’ll redo it here:

[b] [i] [link] [quote] [del] [ins] [img] [ul] [ol] [code] [more] [look up]
    [close tags]

Now, I know some of these such as the first 4, I think I know the next three and the last one. That leaves me with:

    [ul] [ol] [code] [more]

    What do those mean?

BTW – my Safari shows the same thing, but with round buttons where Firefox has square buttons. :)

Okay here you go … it will take some time to type this so hang in

ul- html tag that will insert an unordered list or wrap the selected text in the same. An unordered list will typically be a bulleted list.

ol – html tag that will insert a bulleted list or wrap text in the same. Each item in the list will be typically numbered.

[code] The editor has both a visual mode and a mode for inserting code.

more - this tag <!--more--> is used to break up text in long posts.
When writing a lengthy post there is an option to having the whole post appear on the front page of your blog. You can break the text and have the remaining text appear on another page. The option is called "the more tag" and you can see it in operation right now. <!--more-->

Only one theme at wordpress.com I know of the Hemingway theme always displays only excerpts from two posts side-by-side on the front page. In other themes more tag must be added using either the visual rich text editor, the standard editor or, by hand coding it into each post you that you wish to break the text into smaller segments in.

    (1) If you are using the visual rich text editor then the icon number to use is #13 and you use it wherever you want the text break to occur.
    (2) If you are using the standard editor click the [more] button wherever you want the text break to occur.
    (3) If you are hand coding type in <!--more--> wherever you want the text break to occur.
    (4) If you do not like the text that the theme is hardcoded to provide when you use the more tag you can change it by hand coding in
<!--more your text goes here more!-->
