Writing a custom 404
-
Is there a way to write a custom 404 error message on a wordpress.com blog? I started a blog on my own server, and moved about 3/4 of my posts to the new blog. I’ve changed as many of the inlinks as I can, but some people still follow old links. Is there a way to write a custom 404 to let them know the new site?
If not, what’s the best workaround? Put a text widget in with a link short note and a link to the other site?

I agree with the text widget idea as well. Best way to get it noticed is if it’s the only thing in your sidebar.
Hope this helps,

I’d make your start page a simple page with nothing on it but the redirect. That would be pretty unmissable, wouldn’t it?

Agreed but you still have to deal with the folks coming in via in internal like like from a search engine.

The poster is moving to their own server. Youy would have to modify the htaccess file here on this side.

In my opinion, there should be an option to automatically forward 404 traffic to the front page of the site. Can this be done?

Actually by the RFCs, you’re supposed to produce an 404 page. A redirect elsewhere is incorrect.
