Writing Helper – “You can mark any post to keep it at the top” BUT how ?
-
On the “Add Post” page, press “Copy a post” … then I get the message :
Use an existing post as a template. Pick a post and we’ll copy the title, content, tags and categories. Recent posts are listed below. Search by title to find older posts. You can mark any post to keep it at the top.
But how do I mark the post to keep it at the top ? I’ve looked in “Screen Options”, searched the forums, searched on Google, didn’t find an answer …
I’ve also posted out to my readers with an image of the screen for clarification of the issue here – http://doncharisma.org/2015/04/01/wordpress-com-writing-helper-you-can-mark-any-post-to-keep-it-at-the-top/
(BTW It’s nothing to do with sticky posts – I know what they are and how to use them)

Nope, I have two sticky posts on my blog and neither of these show at the top of the list in the writing-helper/copy-a-post …
My understanding of sticky posts is that they appear first in the blog itself. The text I quoted above appears to indicate that it’s possible to order the posts in the writing-helper/copy-a-post, presumably so templates and regularly re-used posts are easier to find.
My writing helper has – The first three listed in copy-a-post are ones that I have used recently as template posts, and the rest of the the list is reverse date ordered, based on publish or schedule date.

That’s correct and I misunderstood you.

Sorry. I did not interpret it that way and never use this feature, so I tagged this thread for a Staff response. Please subscribe to it so you are notified when they respond. To subscribe look in the sidebar of this thread, find the subscribe to topics link and click it.

No probs, and thanks for trying TT :) … it’s a feature I’ve been using as long as I can remember on WP.com … and the ability to have template posts at the top of the list would save me a little time.

What you suggest “the ability to have template posts at the top of the list would save me a little time” sounds like a useful feature for sure.

Hi Don,
Choosing “Copy” on one of your posts is all you need to do to move it to the top.
The list of posts is shown in recency order, most recent posts first. We will also remember the last 3 posts you have copied, and put them at the top of the list.
Once you a copy a post and save it as draft (or publish), the next time you add new post, and then click Copy a post, you’ll see the post you copied on top, and highlighted like this:

@timethief – yes it is I’ve templated about 4 of my regular post formats, and would like to keep them at the top … it means that I can fill categories, tags and positions of things in the template and just edit it to suit the post … saves me a lot of time doing a post from scratch !
@alexjgustafson – already figured that and thanks for the pic :) … I’d hoped that it would be possible to in some way mark a “draft template” post so that it would stay at the top as per – “You can mark any post to keep it at the top”, but no one seems to know how to do that ! Well apart from the way you mentioned, which isn’t technically marking the post, it’s more like copying it :)
My rationale is that I currently have 4 templates and probably will do more over the course of time. Having these at the top would save time vs searching for them …
Thanks for your help anyway guys :)

Hi Don,
I’ll pass this on to the developers that the wording there is misleading, and that you’d like the function of keeping one particular post at the top (without having to keep copying it). I don’t think ‘copy a post’ ever behaved that way, I think it was always just that copying a post kept it at the top — but I see what you’re going for.

Hey Alex,
It would be useful to have a longer list of regularly reused posts/templates listed at the top, more than one in fact. Some way of marking them as implied in the wording would be ideal. However I do appreciate that it doesn’t do that at the moment.
Thanks for your help :)

Since the copy a post function doesn’t currently have the ability to ‘pin’ a post to the top for frequent use, our developers chose to remove that part of the directions for the time being. But I’ve logged your desire for the functionality. :)
Let me know if I can help with anything else!
