Wrong commenter named
-
Help. I have 3 blogs, all under one account. One of them is a family blog , where I am the administrator and my husband and daughter are authors. Up until now, it has worked fine – they log in to write their own posts or comments and the contribution duly appears under their name and gravatar.
But yesterday my daughter commented on a post and it came up under the name and gravatar of my unrelated main blog, http://landscapelover.wordpress.com I checked and she had definitely logged in, and her name and gravatar were showing on the top right bar. This morning it happened to me as well – I logged in as the name I use on the family blog, but my comment was ascribed to landscapelover. I altered both comments manually to correct the names, but it means our normal gravatars do not appear and clicking on the name takes you through to my main blog.
I know there have been all sorts of problems with commenting recently on WordPress, but had not heard of this particular glitch. It only seemed to start yesterday. Can anyone work out what’s happening? Thanks.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Sorry – just realised that for some reason the name of the family blog is not linked to my user name above. It is http://postcardsfromdelhi.wordpress.com/

I’m going to flag this for staff attention. They’ve been tinkering with gravatar/email/logins to tighten security and it sounds like they may have done the wrong thing.

Hi, yes it’s the third comment on this post (comment number 57): http://postcardsfromdelhi.wordpress.com/2012/03/05/splat-its-holi/ and the second comment on this post (comment number 59) http://postcardsfromdelhi.wordpress.com/2012/04/30/some-day-my-prince-will-come/#comment-59
Grateful for any advice!

These comments weren’t actually left under any particular WordPress.com account, but they were left using the same email address.
The commenter was either not logged in or elected to change their comment details.

Hmm – that’s very strange. When you look under the hood it may appear that we weren’t logged in, but we certainly typed in our user names and passwords, and our names and gravatars were showing on the bar top right as we commented.
And if these comments weren’t left under any particular WordPress.com account, why did they show up as being left by landscapelover, which IS a WordPress.com account?
I’ll see if I can reproduce what happened.

Yes – it’s still doing the same thing. I have a screen shot that I could let you see, that shows the bar at the top with me logged with my username (it’s jss909 but set up to display as Jill) and gravatar. But when I start a comment, the boxes fill automatically with my landscapelover details, although not with the right gravatar for either account. [I have removed the email address that displayed, but it was the one that is used for both accounts.]
It didn’t used to behave like this – I just want to be able to log in and comment under the right name. macmanx, please would you have another look?

Even if you are logged in, you have the ability to leave a generic comment by clicking the Change link near the bottom-right of the comment form.
What you’re showing in the screenshot is basically the generic form with filled in details.
Click the small W logo above to switch back to your WordPress.com account details.

Thanks for having another look. Perhaps I was not being clear. I have two separate blogs, different user names, different gravatars. What is happening is that I had logged in as jss909/Jill on one blog, but WP filled in the form with details from the other blog / user name (but not the gravatar from either) and had credited the comment to the other blog. I had not opted to leave a generic comment – and indeed didn’t do so.
I’ve just had another look (planning to experiment with the small W logo, which I’ve never noticed before) and now it all appears to be fine, and tells me “Jill, you are commenting using your WordPress account.”
So I am still not sure what happened, but hopefully it was a brief glitch and all will be well from now on. Thanks again for trying to help.

That’s because you were using the generic fill-in-you-own-info comment form. It remembered the info from the last time you used it.
Just stick with the W logo and you’ll be fine.

OK, I’ll keep an eye on it.
It still strikes me as odd that you can be logged in as one user name but WP automatically uses information from another one (except it doesn’t get the gravatar right). Plus WP has never before remembered the info from the last time I used the comment form and thus filled it in wrongly. It felt like a new and unwelcome change.
But I will labour the point no more.
