Wrong domain name

When I set up my Esther Inglis site, I put in the name incorrectly. Before I publish the site, I need to change EstherIngliscom.wordpress.com to EstherInglis.wordpress.com

  • The name EstherInglis is already taken, so you won’t be able to change to that.

You can change to any available address following the steps at https://wordpress.com/support/changing-site-address/

Or, consider adding a custom domain instead: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/#add-a-domain-name

Yes, when I first tried to change it, it said that name was taken, but when I search the web for EstherInglis.wordpress.com or just EstherInglis.com, nothing comes up. Can you do the name with dashes? Esther-Inglis.wordpress.com?

  • Hi there,

To clarify, when you pick a username, we “reserve” a site of the same address for you to use. For example, no one can register ‘georgiannaziegler.wordpress.com” since it is your username, even though you yourself are not using that address.

That is the case with estherInglis.wordpress.com as well. The user “estherInglis” has not created the site (so it does not show up if you try to visit it) but it is reserved for their future use, and we do not have a way to “free it up” to use on this account.

So with this in mind you can try an alternate spelling that is available in our system. Your site address can only contain letters and numbers, so special characters like dashes are not possible to use.

One thing you may want to consider however is upgrading to one of our WordPress.com Plans, all of which include a free domain for the first year: https://wordpress.com/pricing/

This would allow you to register estheringlis.com (no “wordpress” in the URL) which I can see is available in our system.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks so much – that really clarifies things, and I’ll decide what to do. G
