Wrong image showing in reader

When I have more than one image in my Standard format posts, the WordPress Reader routinely displays a small image from the very end of the post instead of the first image in the post.

I do not use image galleries, slideshows, or video/audio embeds, so it’s not from those overriding my image selection.

I don’t use featured images with my theme. (And I have tried that and it didn’t work anyway.)

If the response is “…When the Reader looks for an image, it goes for the featured image first and then an image inserted into the post — if there are no images that meet the size criteria mentioned above…”
Then please, what size criteria? I found this explanation several times on the forum but could not find the size criteria they mentioned.

It’s consistently ignoring the first and larger image from the beginning of the post and choosing a tiny small one from the end, so either the image size or dimensions may be my problem.
