  A new person started following me today, but instead of adding 1, the site subtracted 1!

  Where did you exactly see this subtraction? was it under WordPress.com followers or e-mail followers?
  It’s possible that someone unsubscribed from your blog around the same time someone else subscribed to it.

  Well, it was exactly the same time, but I guess anything is possible.
