Wrong website name

  • Unknown's avatar

When I was creating my blog, I chose the option ‘littlebitofwonder.com’ for $18.00 a year, then I went forward to the next step. I didn’t put my credit card in yet, just in case I changed my mind about making a blog. When I went forward, the name of my website was different. It changed to ‘littlebitofwonderdotcom.wordpress.com’, and I’m unsure how to change it back.

That happened because one needs to register an underlying .wordpress.COM blog URL in order to map from it to a domain URL. You failed to register the underlying .wordpress.com URL first so the software supplied the http://littlebitofwonderdotcom.wordpress.com/ URL to enable domain mapping. Does that help you understand the domain mapping process?

WordPress.com provides free blogs and hosts them free of charge. There are no bandwidth charges. All WordPress.com blogs come with 3000 megabytes (~3 GBs) of space for storing uploaded files and images. Free features are listed here https://en.wordpress.com/features/

See here for details of all 3 plans http://store.wordpress.com/bundles/ offered by WordPress.com.
    Premium bundle details http://store.wordpress.com/plans/premium/
    Business bundle details http://store.wordpress.com/plans/business/

Note that each upgrade bundle applies to a single blog only and is for a single year only when it is due to be renewed.

We all pay in full for every upgrade at the time of purchase. Make sure you read the comparison very closely do you know exactly what the restrictions and limitations on WordPress.COM blogging are: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard and purchase upgrades at > Dashboard> Store > My Upgrades
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/my-upgrades/

Your billing history will be at Dashboard > Store > Billing History
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/billing-history/

Your only options for payment are found here http://en.support.wordpress.com/payment/

Then you need to set up domain mapping. This is not done for you.
Read Important Notes Before Upgrading http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgrading

In order to map to a domain URL one must have an underlying .wordpress.com sub-domain blog to map from, and the domain name you desire must be available for purchase, or you must already own the domain URL.

All that changes when you are domain mapping is the URL and nothing else. The content stays exactly where it is. What domain mapping does its create a seamless transfer between the underlying .wordpress.com blog URLs to the new domain URLs no matter where they are on the internet. Visitors who click the underlying .wordpress.com blog URLs will be seamlessly redirected to the exact same content under the new domain URLs.

Please read Domains: Important Notes Before Upgrading http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

See here if you do not own a domain
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
    http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/register-domain/

See here for mapping an existing domain that you already own http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

See here if you already have a website you don’t want to affect, and you want to add a blog to it under a subdomain (for example, blog.yourgroovydomain.com) see here http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-subdomain/

so with that being said, does that mean that if i have the premium plan, “littlebitofwonderdotcom.wordpress.com” will change to “littlebitofwonder.com” ?

  • Hi there,

As @timethief has explained, all sites here start with a free domain, and that never goes away – deleting that URL equals deleting your blog.

But if you register a custom domain, either on its own or as part of the Premium Plan, that custom domain will appear in the pace of the free address, so visitors to your site will never see the free address, only the one you paid for.

Note that you can also change the free address itself, but if you’re going to buy a custom domain that’s not really necessary. But let me know if you want more information on that.

So if I download premium, will it automatically change to “littlebitofwonder.com” ?

  • Not automatically, no. You will still need to physically register the domain, but the cost of doing that is included in the Premium Plan subscription.

You can read at the link below exactly what a domain registration entails, but shortly you will need to provide your contact details in order to register one. You will need to do this no matter where you buy a domain, as it is a requirement for domain ownership imposed by ICANN, the organisation that controls all domain names on the web. That contact information is stored in a public database, unless you also activate Private Registration (also included in the Premium Plan).

Please ask if you have any more questions.

i have decided i no longer want my blog, or my account. is there a way that you can delete everything of mine?

  • We’re sorry to see you go!

If you want to permanently delete your site, please first empty it of all the contents by following the guide below:

Empty Your Site to Start Fresh

and then completely delete it by following the steps outlined here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/delete-site/

Please read the warnings and advice before deleting a site. We can’t revert a site deletion for any reason and the site address cannot be reused.

If you want to hide your site instead, you can use the following guide to make your site private so that only you and people that you have invited can view the site:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

It’s not possible to completely delete your account, but if you are sure you no longer want to use it, you can:

    * Log in to your account at Gravatar.com.
    * Go to the Gravatar image in the upper right, click Edit My Profile, and remove all data and photos except the account name and an email address.
    * Then click “View Profile” and click the link that says “Hide My Profile.” This will make your account appear as though it has been deleted, but you will still have access.

If you want to go a step further, you can create a throwaway email address and add it to the account, change the primary email to that throwaway address, then remove your real email address. This leaves only the username behind, and we only keep that name so no one can reuse it.

Note that we’ll maintain a record of your username, in order to ensure that another user doesn’t register it in the future (which would cause confusion for everyone).

Any comment subscriptions you might have are managed at WordPress.com, and you can access that here:
