Wrongly Renewed
-
I purchased a domain name last September and chose to manually renew the blog in a years time. 2 days ago (Aug 11th, 2014) I received an email stating that the domain name was listed to expire on September 10th. The email states ” to renew, cancel or otherwise manage your domain……. please visit…..” Knowing that I did not sign up for auto-renew and thinking I had until early September, or at the very minimum a week, to act I held off. However my account was charged today(August 13th, 2014). Nowhere in the email was there a date, or any indication at all, that told of a forthcoming charge, otherwise I would have acted immediately. I would appreciate a refund as I have not given permission for my account to be charged. To give a person less than 48 hours to act to prevent something they didn’t even think was going to happen is just bad business.

All domain renewal processes are commence a month prior to the expiry date so if anything goes wrong there’s time to fix it and we do not lose the domain. There is no loss of actual time in the upgrade.

That doesn’t help me at all now, does it? That information was never conveyed to me. Your response is not helpful in anyway to my problem.

Hi there,
I just sent you an email to the address which we have on file for you. Go ahead and take a look there and get back to me by responding there, if you don’t mind!

depending on how you have selected the renew (auto or manual or something else) – you are not really sent a notice soon enough to correct an error – having auto renew enabled (either on purpose or by accident) will make sure that you don’t get early notification emails – so you will not have much time to correct any errors – it has been a sore point with me for some time (and a year or so back the renewal email system was broken) –
since I have auto renew for this site – I will not get the 90 – 60 day etc notice – I MIGHT get the 14 day notice that I will be charged
I still think the system could use some fine tuning – & yes @amightywp – I know something like 12 renewal notices a minute go out – but I still think that one notice @ 14 days is a bit light

Hey, I fully understand everyone’s frustration. I don’t like getting suddenly charged any more than anyone else does! It’s why we try and provide solutions which work for as many people as possible. I personally have everything set to manual renewal (for every service, not just WordPress.com). That way I only get annoyed by a million reminder emails, which IMO is better than getting charged.
Which is funny, because I’ll almost always go and pay immediately. It’s the exact same thing. And I always have the money in that account. It’s just the principle of the thing. ;)

I still think there should be one notice standard with the first notice around 90 days and allow manual renewal at that time even for auto renew upgrades
I also would like to see multi-year renewals for domain names and domain mapping – that would let people get a bit ahead of things if they will be on vacation or just don’t like to worry about each year – my domain name has been renewed into the future for several years – but I can’t do that for domain mapping here
then there are the emails that go to an address that is not used much or when the email gets caught in a spam filter
