Howdy,
Do you already own consultingworksforyou.com? The domain is already registered (see https://who.wildwestdomains.com/whois.aspx?k=WyQNhFFhd+Lhs9A57g8FX2yuR/pfYRTh9EC8jG6IG+ZjHw4//j5wTXG0uNyE6Qg7h8WXS1DBlFI=&domain=consultingworksforyou.com&prog_id=wildwestdomains ), so if you own it, you can follow the instructions for mapping an existing domain to change your nameservers to ns1.wordpress, ns2.wordpress.com, and ns3.wordpress.com.
If you don’t already own it, I can credit your account the $13 so you can add a new domain.
We strip out the www on all domains on WordPress.com, to keep things nice and tidy since, technically, http://www.consultingworksforyou.com and consultingworksforyou.com are different sites and allowing both can cause a great deal of confusion.
Cheers!

Yes, I own http://www.consultingworksforyou.com
I own the name through Go Daddy and I host the domain at Sover.net
I own it as consultingworksforyou.com, but Sovernet needs to have the WWW in order to point to it. How do we proceed? Thanks so much, Robin -
Hi Robin,
The recommended way is to change your nameservers as indicated in the support doc so both the “naked” or root domain of consultingworksforyou.com and http://www.consultingworksforyou.com will direct to your site.
Otherwise, your visitors will have a less-than-ideal experience as many folks type in the addresses directly, omitting the www, which would bring up an error message instead of your site.
This would bypass the Sovernet DNS servers, so if you have any e-mail accounts using that domain, I can setup the MX records so you won’t have a disruption of service in the transition.
Cheers!

Thanks, Is there a cost for you to host my DNS that is different from the $13 I am paying now?
-
Hi Robin,
Nope—that is included as part of the Domain Mapping upgrade. You can access the DNS editor via the Store->Domains->Edit DNS page on your blog’s dashboard.
The direct link is https://consultingworks.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains&action=dnsedit&domain=consultingworksforyou.com
If you need a hand with anything, please do let me know. Cheers!

Great, so….do I need to contact GoDaddy and have them switch to you instead of Sovernet?
-
Correct—the registrar where the domain is registered is where the nameservers should be changed. We have a sample script of what to send to them at Map an Existing Domain.
Once again, if you need a hand with transferring any of the DNS settings from Sovernet to WP.com, please let me know!

Great, one final question
I also have http://www.shimmies.net with Sovernet and we did manage to point that several years ago to shimmies.wordpress.com by using cname record to point. Did you change something in the meantime, because that one does work? Just curious?
-
That one was done in a different way.
http://www.shimmies.net points to shimmies.net which forwards to shimmies.wordpress.com, so the domain isn’t actually mapped to the WordPress.com site. With mapping, all attempts to access *.wordpress.com will display the domain name instead (so search engines will see the example.com links, rather than example.wordpress.com).
With shimmies.wordpress.com, search engines (and users) are still seeing the wordpress.com address.
Both valid ways of doing it, though if you’re looking for a more “branded” experience, having the domain mapped liked we’re doing with your new site is the way to go and better long-term (since no links will have to be updated if you move away from WordPress.com).
Cheers!
