www prefix in wordpress domain name

I have a quick question regarding “domain mapping” in wordpress.com. My desire is to acquire a www prefix domain name either through wordpress or from another provider, and map it to my wordpress blog so that the www prefix, for instance http://www.mydomainname.com is all folks have to use in order to get to my wordpress site. Can I do all of this through wordpress or do I have to go with another party for the www domain-name and simply map it back to my wordpress blog?

    Thanks

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If you read the domain mapping section you will find that there is no “www” in any WordPress.com URLs. If you register a domain with “www” in the URL it will be directed to the same content without the “www”.

Also, please note that WordPress.com automatically removes the “www” from all URLs. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/register-domain/#before-upgrading-important-notes

Thanks Timethief. I did read the domain mapping guide, and this was why I asked, because it was unclear. It is still unclear. So, in essence, I can purchase the “www” domain elsewhere, and then map it to my current wordpress.com domain. People will then be able to type in “www.mydomain.com, and it will then take them to my wordpress.com site……..correct? Of course when they get there wordpress.com will have removed the “www” from the URL, but that’s ok with me, as long as using the “purchased elsewhere” www prefixed url will get them there. My question remains…..will it work this way?

Yes. You have described exactly what will happen with domain mapping. :)

Wonderful! Thanks so much for your assistance.

ummmm, you wouldn’t happen to know how I can appear as a different character in each of my blogs would you? I have two seperate blogs, and want to appear as cartoonplanes in one, but as “another name other than cartoonplanes”in the other. Since they are both already set up, is there any way I can appear differently in each? My reason is I don’t want people to know that I’m the same person in each, ie one is private, and the other more professional. TIA!

I have two seperate blogs, and want to appear as cartoonplanes in one, but as “another name other than cartoonplanes”in the other.

When we register a username we suppoy an email address that becoemes our unique indetifier. When we are logged in under that username account and register a blog it will be registered to that username. We can create a “nickname” or “display” name but it will appear on all blogs registered to the same username account.

In order to completely separate the blogs that are not associated with each other you register another username account using a different email address when you are logged out of WordPress.com. Then you add the new username account as an official user of the blog, and designate them as an Admin. Next you transfer one of the blogs to the new username account using this process.
