www vs non-www
-
I’ve set up a wordpress website as missioncables.com, however, I’d like to have the address actually be http://www.missioncables.com. Is there a way to switch ‘missioncables.com’ to be ‘www.missioncables.com’? When I tried to add the domain ‘www.missioncables.com’ I receive the message that this domain is already registered with wordpress.com.

No. Remove the www.
All www URLs on mapped domains like http://www.thesilicontropic.com redirect seamlessly to the same content under the URL without the redundant “www”. The software will continue to strip out the redunant and unnecessary www.
Be aware that www is an old protocol from way back when the web was new and everything was under separate server hardware. www (www.example.com) was the web server, mail (mail.example.com) was the mail server, ftp (ftp.example.com) was the FTP server, print (print.example.com) was the print server, etc.
These days, everything is run under the web server, making www. redundant and a waste of four characters.

Thanks for the response. In my case, it seems that http://www.missioncables.com does not redirect to http://missioncables.com. Therefore, my understanding is that visitors who type in http://www.missioncables.com into their browser will not be directed to my site. Am I missing something?

something is strange – your site will not direct with the www – however the site linked to my name will properly redirect to the correct URL without the www in it
i have flagged this for the staff since the redirect should work and works on other sites I have worked with

Hi there,
There does appear to be an error with the automatic redirect on your domain. I’m reporting it to our developers to look into. I’ll update you here as soon as I hear something from them.

Hi again,
I just noticed that you have added a TXT record to your domain specifying the “www”. That record does not appear in our instructions for Outlook mail. Were you instructed by them to add that record?
If they didn’t tell you to add that record, please try deleting it and see if that makes any difference.

I deleted the “www” TXT record and now the redirecting is working fine. Thanks for everyone’s help!
