Xanga (2013)

Hi. Word is out that Xanga is either rebooting or shutting down in July. They are offering free archiving, so I took the opportunity to download my archives. When I checked them out, I saw that they are all .htm docs.

I’m wondering if you guys are looking into the possibility of an importer. I’m sure some of that crowd will head this way. For me, I just thought it’d be nice to finally have everything in one place. I’d be up for being your guinea pig, as long as my old private Xanga posts stayed private. :)

    Thanks!

    Hi there,

It doesn’t look like there’s currently an easy way to export your Xanga content and import it into a WordPress blog (or any other blog for that matter). We’re looking into this matter and may have an update soon.

Hi, I am also facing the same issue! Please let me know if there are any new solutions as I am hopping to move to wordpress as well!

Ditto. I would also like to be able to import my blog… I saw that there was something from like 3 years ago that would allow it into scripts, but the information was too confusing. Someone mentioned that it might be possible through RSS 2.0, well, how would we go about doing that instead of waiting for an update for xanga import?

We are still looking into this issue, and we appreciate your patience in the meantime. At this point, we are not aware of a reliable alternate method for moving your content from Xanga to WordPress.com.

I am trying the service offered by a third party company (http://www.rewritely.com/migration/xanga), hopefully they will do this for me..

I’m facing the same problem…. there’s a reason Xanga is shutting down..

Xanga now allows you to archive your blogs at http://www.xanga.com/private/archives.aspx once you save the archive to your computer, you just need the wordpress xml and you can then go to your dashboard and select the import option and then select thewordpress import and it will transfer over all of your blogs, and pulses. The only thing I didn’t like is that 90% of my pulses became private. However, it only took 10 seconds to get all of my blogs transferred over once I figured out which xml file to select for import.

    Problem Solved, everyone!

As of July 8, the Xanga Team has graciously made a WordPress XML Version of the archive available.

They have until the end of July to determine if they will keep going, so I would say, “Go download it now!” It will be the second option here: http://www.xanga.com/private/archives.aspx

If nothing comes up when you click it, try switching browsers (IE worked for me). Then, as blazeangelg said, go to the dashboard and import the file you just saved as a WordPress archive file.

I will tell you on my blog, I noticed it looks like I lost my comments, but that wasn’t super important to me. My private posts were still labeled private, though–which was very important to me!

Hope this helps someone! Thanks for being a step ahead blazeangelg! :)

@blazeangelg and @2251miles – Thanks for coming back and posting an update!

If anyone else sees this, I recommend making your entire WordPress.com site Private until the import completes. That way you can check to be sure everything is set up and working correctly (including Private posts being viewable only by you) before going “public”.
