Xml export file from WP.org too big to import onto WP.com. Solutions ?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I’m currently trying to import my HUGE wordpress blog into wordpress.com but the xml file is too big (37Mo) so it’s a fail. Then I used the plugin advanced export to reduce the data, but now wordpress.com says there is no author in my xml file. What to do ?
Thank you very much for your help.

Sorry for this re-post, I just changed the title (in French originaly) to English. Moderators may want to delete the original post ?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Is the site you have the XML export file from still online?
If yes, what is the URL?

If the file is large you may have to import Posts, Pages, etc. in separate files. Or if the file is very large Staff may have to do the import.

    Thank you very much Timethief.
I have subscribed to this topic.

The blog I exported the xml file from is still online but not for long.
    http://www.lacath.com
I have a full backup (files, db, etc.)

I tried to export only the posts, but “posts only” means no pictures… So I tried to export only medias, but then I couldn’t link them to the posts… And I tried to transfer only a period of time, and then there was no author…

And the “lacathcom.wordpress.com” is not the definitive name for the new blog, I chose it just for trials and errors…

I really hope the staff can help me !
    Thanks again Timethief !

  • Hi @leblogdelacath,

If you export the posts, our importer will typically pick up the pictures from the current host and import them for you. That assumes the existing site is still live on the other server, though.

Can you confirm that is the case?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, it is the case. The other site is still live, all pictures can be imported from there.
Does it mean, as I wish it to be, that the pictures will be loaded by your importer into wordpress.com/mynewblog, and that there will be no pictures left linked as “lacath.com/wp-content/uploads/…” ?

I’m sorry, there might be a problem with the source blog lacath.com : It seems that my host was waiting for me to pay for their services… Which I just did. It might yet take a few days before they give full acces to lacath.com.
I’m really sorry, the due date is still 10 days ahead, I had no idea they would put my blog aside until I paid !!!!

Anyway, I did pay. 2 hours ago.
Everything should work again very soon.
    I’m really sorry !

  • No worries; once it’s live again, you can try running the import once more. Let us know when you’ve done that and we’ll check it for you. Cheers!

    Hi Supernovia !
I thank you for your help and support !

    The source blog is http://www.lacath.com
My export file is ready for you.
How can I send it to you ?

AND, sorry to bother you with more questions…
I don’t want this new blog to have the current name lacathcomblog.wordpress.com. I am the owner of the domain name lacath.com (Gandi) and my goal is to have a simple name on wordpress.com such as “lacath.wordpress.com“, my readers won’t be too confused, they will follow easily when I let go of my domain name (or I decide to keep it, but through wordpress.com services, not Gandi)
I tried to create lacath.wordpress.com, but I couldn’t create it (wp message : The address lacath.wordpress.com cannot be registered. Sorry, that site is reserved!), so I ended up with lacathcomblog, which I took only for trials… Very complicated, I know… Sorry…

Anyway, my question is : how can I have “lacath.wordpress.com” for my definitive blog name ?

I guess it’s important to create the right blogname before importing the files, or am I wrong ?

Thanks again for taking the time to help me !
    Cath

  • The name lacath.wordpress.com is not available (it belongs to the person who owns that username).

But if you won’t be using lacath.com elsewhere, you could use an upgrade to point it here. Or you could keep lacath.com where it is and point blog.lacath.com here. Let us know what you’d like to do so we can make sure to import into the right address.

For the XML file, can you remove all spam and unmoderated comments on the old site, then see if the import file is smaller than 15MB? If it is you should be able to import it on your own. If it is not, we can split it for you, but please make sure any spam comments are gone first.

Hi Supernovia, thank you for your answer.

I have just created a new blog, which name is “lacathcuisine“, so lacathcuisine.wordpress.com is my definitive choice for my blogname.
I will delete my 2 other blog trials later.

Thank you for listing all the possibilities available to make my old blog address point to the new one. I need a free hosting solution for my blog, so I won’t use an upgrade.

I have removed all spam/unmoderated comments from my source blog, and unfortunately it didn’t change the size of the xml file which is 39,2Mo !

So I’m sorry to ask for your help again… What shall I do now to import my 39.2 Mo xml file to lacathcuisine.wordpress.com ?

    Thank you very much !
    Cath

  • @leblogdelacath if you can upload it to Dropbox or Cloudup or a similar service, and send the link, we can run the splitter for you and import it.

Well, Supernovia, this is it !
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/c0p73we8ax4q29s/leblogdelacath.TOUT.wordpress.2016-09-26.xml?dl=0
I hope it works, that you can upload everything to wp.com, db, files, the whole nine yards, (I think that’s the correct way to say it, forgive my English please) and then I can have fun again with my blog !
Thank you so much for your help !
    Cath

  • Thanks @leblogdelacath, that will do. :) I’ll be working on the import and will let you know when it’s done. Cheers!

  • Hello @leblogdelacath! Your site is imported. Now you’ll just want to customize your theme. Let us know if you need any help!

OMG you did it ! I’m so happy ! Thank you so much ! Ten years of blogging that thanks to you won’t get lost, and that I will be able to continue to feed ! Thank you so much, I’m so happy !
I’m going to remove the xml file from my dropbox, delete the “trial blogs” that I have created and start personalising my blog.
    OMG I’m so happy !!!!!
    THANK YOU !!!
    Cath

  • Ahh we love hearing that!

Can I recommend one more thing? Not to try to ‘sell’ you anything, but if you’re planning on getting rid of the old host, you’ll want to point your domain here so that you won’t lose SEO / links to the old site. You can do that even with our personal plan. If you need to go with a free site instead, I get that. Just wanted to let you know that is an option, and if you need help setting it up, we’re here.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thanks Supernovia.
I really need a free host, so I won’t get a plan. Not yet, anyway.
I’ll do the redirections myself, from my old blog, I hope I can do it and if not, well, that’s life ! SEO is not important for me, I mean the info/stats are OK but I don’t earn any money with my blog, I don’t sell anything, it’s just an online cookbook for me, which by chance happened to be liked by lots of readers. Those of the readers who really like the blog will follow, and the others, well… New readers will come !

Thanks again for your help Supernovia !
    Cath

  • You bet, Cath. Do know if you have plenty of readers, you’re welcome to apply for Wordads.co once you have a domain here. Cheers!

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi Supernovia, my blog is now active, I did the permanent redirection to the new blog, and I have a few questions for you :

1 – Could you please change the links to the old blog inside the posts ? You know, the update request to the db to replace option-value in wp_options, guid in wp_posts and user_url in wp_users etc. ?
I should SO have done that BEFORE making the xml file !
I started doing it manually but I have around 650 recipes… If you can’t, no worries, I’ll do it anyway.

2- I noticed that a “search widget” is available on the computer version but not on smartphone or pad. Is there a way to have this search widget also on phone/pad, like the wptouch plugin does on the wordpress.org version ? Or maybe I didn’t see it ?

3- I would like to submit an idea for a widget to add to the already available list : an automatic table of content or index by category ! ;-)

Thank you so much for your patience with me and all your hard work !
    Cath

  • @leblogdelacath I don’t have access to SQL but if you don’t mind re-importing, that kind of thing is fixable in the XML.

Did all of the images import properly? That’s something I always like to check with large imports.

About the widget: we do have a categories widget; would that do the trick for you?

And I can see you currently have the default mobile theme active, which comes with a search box at the top. Some other themes probably have a mobile search too if you’re interested in changing. Or you can just use the regular mobile template. What do you want to do?
