Hi guys, I’m moving my xml files from wordpress.com to wordpress.org and i’m encountering a couple problems:

    – the authors didnt move over and now they’re all attributed to admin
    – only 3500 of the 3900 images moved over

Also, is there a plug in that makes all the .com shortcodes work in .org? I found one for the soundcloud player but i dont know if theres something that works for everything.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Just to be clear, are you referring to electroniccurrentdotcom.wordpress.com?

As for the post authors, when you export the the content into your self-hosted site, you should have been prompted to import the author or to assign the posts to yourself like this:

    http://d.pr/i/1dX62

Do you remember seeing that option?

Regarding the images, I’m guessing the exporter on the self-hosted side may have stalled out due to the file size. I can send you an export file that’s a bit more broken down. That should pull over the rest of the images!

Also, is there a plug in that makes all the .com shortcodes work in .org?

Have you installed Jetpack on your site? If you have, you should be able to correct this by activating the Jetpack shortcode feature. You can find out more about enabling different Jetpack features here:

    Yes I am.

I did see that option, I chose to import author and got the error message ‘unable to import author, assigned to current author’ don’t know what to do now.

    Thant would be fantastic thanks.

I did, and its wonderful. Unfortunately when I click shortcode embeds the page freezes and is all white: http://69.195.124.213/~jessewhe/electroniccurrent/wp-admin/admin.php?page=jetpack&action=activate&module=shortcodes&_wpnonce=821ca65e7b

    Thanks for clarifying!

Regarding the post authors, the only thing I can think of currently would be to wipe the site and start again with another import or manually input the authors. Otherwise, if we try to run the import again right now, it will come back with a “File already exists error.” The easiest method will likely be adding the authors and then bulk editing the posts to assign them to a specific author. I’m sorry for the trouble!

Regarding the shortcode, you will need to install this plugin on your self-hosted site for the Display Post Shortcode to work:

Display Posts – Easy lists, grids, navigation, and more

there are over a thousand posts and 20+ authors so even bulk edit assigning the posts would be impossible.

how can i wipe the site of the posts?
and what should i do to make sure it works this time? I was on the phone with bluehost for an hour and we worked out all the kinks on their end but it was still coming up with an error when i imported the whole file. Only the authors came through but not the posts. Then when I imported the files individually i got that unable to import author error and all the posts were attributed to me.

you said – I can send you an export file that’s a bit more broken down.
can i get that for the images? to clarify i already know about the way to download individual xml files for posts/comments etc.

    Hi Jesse,

Bluehost would be the best bet to help you clear out all of the old information. Could you ask them if they could help you wipe your current WordPress install? We could just manually delete all of your content, but that would take some tedious effort. They have to have a better way.

Regarding the export, I’ll send those files your way right now. I’m in the process of doing some local testing to make sure this works next time we run the import. I’ll get back to you within the next few hours with the results from my tests!

I got a plugin that let me wipe all the users and posts, i turned off all plugins and then i went to a default theme and I tried re-uploading, but once again it wasn’t able to take all the images and and all posts were assigned to one author. Would it really help to delete my wordpress install? Thats a lot of stuff I’ve already put together.

    Hi Jesse,

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I ran the first part of the XML file in an import into a local install. All of the post authors were imported correctly so I’m not sure what could be happening here. The only thing I made sure to do was check “Download and import media files” at the bottom of the page.

I’m wondering if this might be some sort of size limitation at Bluehost. Did they indicate anything like that?

  • Unknown's avatar

They did not. When I upload it says there is a 100MB limitation in wordpress. I always check the download and import box.
are you able to upload it to my site directly if i give you the info?

Let’s try one last attempt. I was able to get this to work repeatedly on a local install.

Can you erase all current posts (delete permanently) and delete all authors that may have been imported under Users -> All Users (with the exception of your admin account).

Try importing the first xml file, which should have a file name like this:

    theelectroniccurrent.wordpress.2015-01-20.001.xml

Choose the option to import the post authors. From my testing, this should bring over the bulk of the authors.

For the second import, we don’t want to bring over the post authors. Instead, choose the author already imported that matches the author it’s trying to import.

Can you try that for the first two files? After doing those steps, I have 1,000+ posts all assigned to various authors.

  • Unknown's avatar

What do you mean by the first two files??
I can go to my old blog and download the xml files but theres only an option for a whole file or four separate ones (content, comments, etc.)

  • Unknown's avatar

Can you send these two files to me?

    Hi Jesse,

I just resent it to the email address associated with your account. Can you let me know if you received it?

  • Unknown's avatar

nothing… what’s the incoming email address? are you sending to the one i mentioned above?

also I tried importing authors individually, which works for creating separate authors, but unfortunately not all the media files are coming across and a lot are missing the featured image.

  • Unknown's avatar

I found the emails but the link was to a 404

    Hi Jesse,

I just emailed you a new link you can use to download the export files Jeremey mentioned. Please let us know if you don’t get that email!

  • Unknown's avatar

    got it thanks!

Ok somehow when I was deleting the other users I think my administrator account was also deleted. I’m now locked out and can’t get a new password because it won’t recognize my email.

  • Unknown's avatar

i swear i didn’t click delete administrator, i don’t even think that should be possible. But now I can’t get in

    Hi Jesse,

Unfortunately, the support staff here at WordPress.com don’t have the tools/access to help with that sort of thing on self-hosted (WordPress.org) sites. If you need, you can use a guide like this one to help add a new admin user to your site:

    http://www.dnawebagency.com/how-to-add-an-admin-user-to-wordpress-database/

If you run into trouble or have questions about that, you can get more help with the process in the WordPress.org forums or from your new site’s host (who may be able to restore a backup of your site, if they have one).
