xml import-issue?

    Hi there folks,
I am trying to import an older version of a wordpress.com blog xml file into my new wordpress.com account, (so I can expand it and do further changes).
I use the import methods, (both in wp-admin and in the WP Dashboard), and apart from the fact that it takes ages to import, (only a small file), it either comes up as “unspecified error occurred during import”, or, after a few tries, it said that it was imported.
Well, my posts are there, but some images are missing, and the blog looks nothing like the original. It has just adopted a default theme.
Do I need to recreated colours, layout, etc??? Should it not have imported exactly like the original?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

    some images are missing

Is the old blog still online? If the old blog is no longer online, has been deleted or is set to private your images won’t import. The import file doesn’t contain images, but only links to the images in the media library of the old site. So if the media library of the old site is no longer accessible, then the importer can’t find the images to import them.

the blog looks nothing like the original. It has just adopted a default theme.

The export file also does not contain any settings, customizations or themes. It only contains posts, pages and comments. Everything else needs to be set up on the new site manually again.

    Hi Kokkieh,

Thank you so much for your reply! I really appreciate it. I thought this may be the case and was afraid I had to recreate it..! At least I’m certain now..!

    Thank you again..

  • Glad I could help :)
