  • Hi there,

And .sql file is for when you transfer an entire WordPress site. WordPress.com sites cannot be transferred in that way – here you can only export your content in the form of an .xml file.

To move that file to 1and1, you first need to do a new install of the WordPress software on their end. Then you do to that site’s dashboard, so not your hosting control panel at 1and1 but the actual dashboard at yourdomain/wp-admin, and import the .xml file at Tools ->Import. The entire process is explained in more detail here:

    https://move.wordpress.com/

Please explain to 1and1 that you are coming from WordPress.COM, and that you only have your content as a .xml file, not a full site backup as a .sql file. They should be well aware of the fact that there is a difference between WordPress.com and the version of WordPress that they host on their servers.
