XMP image data missing from wordpress.com hosted image files

While EXIF image data is being copied from the uploaded image file to the hosted image file the XMP image data is not being copied. Since the EXIF “FileAccessDate”, “FileInodeChangeDate” and “FileModifyDate” fields are different between the two files wordpress.com is either purposely stripping the XMP data along with altering the above EXIF date fields or [and more likely] the XMP data is not being copied from the uploaded image file to the hosted image file. The latter could be explained by a bug (failure to copy XMP data) in wordpress.com’s image uploading process.

The missing data was confirmed using a hex editor on both the uploaded image file and the hosted image file.

    Thanks

Also if this is a bug I can’t confirm that this is only a wordpress.com issue or an issue with the entire wordpress code base but WordPress Trac doesn’t show any support tickets submitted concerning XMP data in JPEG files. Thanks again.

One last thing: this issue was first reported on this forum way back in 2013 and a few times after that. No one from wordpress.com support staff ever replied to any of those posts. The management at wordpress.com must be aware of this bug and have chosen not to fix it.

I was tasked by my employer (a consulting firm that manages a few dozen, medium sized commerce sites) with evaluating wordpress.com as a possible replacement for our current hosting service. I believe I now know what I’ll be telling them.

    Best of luck.
