Yahoo hosts domain, can I still map?
-
I imagine this question has been asked before, and I have seen some referring to godaddy.com, so apologies in advance..
Yahoo/Geocities hosts my domain name; I have gone in and added ns1.wordpress.com and ns2.wordpress.com as name servers #3 and 4 – Yahoo says I must keep the first two (the primary and secondary) set to yns1.yahoo.com and yns2.yahoo.com.
So, I like the service I get with yahoo for now – I’m lazy and don’t like change (at least in regard to my website host set up). I have paid my ten credits, asked wordpress.com to map to my domain, and so far nothing’s happened. Of course I realize it’s only been an hour or two.. but I just have a generic index.html page on my domain(www.example.com/index.html). If you go to my blog at http://www.example.wordpress.com it forwards you to http://www.example.com, but all you see is my generic home page (index.html) – is there anything else I need to do?
Thanks much for any help you guys can offer..

Can you give us the actual URLs? It normally takes a while to get it working correctly, but you will definitely have to change the nameservers. Have you read the FAQ?

Hi Raincoaster – thanks for the reply.
Yes, I read that but it ddn’t answer the question of having two completely different name servers. The way I undersand it is that if I remove the yahoo name servers they discontinue the service of hosting – and I don’t want that. Especially since I’m not entirely clear on whether I’m “renting” the domain from them or if I actually own it – I’ll do my homework on that tonight.
the blog url is http://www.blasphemousgirl.wordpress.com and the domain is http://www.theblasphemousgirl.com – if you go to the WP addy, you’ll see that it automatically sends you to my domain, but then you get the construction page. As of now, it’s been about 12 hours (patience is not my strong suit) – I’m more curious about the nameserver thing. Or, if anyone out there has dealt with the situation of pre-owning a yahoo domain and mapping their wordpress blog to it.

Hi guys, I’ve got the same problem too. I’ve registered a domain in yahoo and paid for the adding of Domain in wordpress.
Now I have tried to add wordpress DNS into yahoo nameservers as below:
Primary: ns1.wordpress.com
Secondary: ns2.wordpress.com
Additional: ns3.wordpress.comAnd set my Domain in wordpress to point to mydomain.com.
But somehow when I visit http://www.groomingeeks.com, it still appears the default under construction page provided by Yahoo.
Any of you guys found the solutions? Thanks.

@blasphemousgirl: if you didn’t change the nameservers to the wordpress.com ones, it seems to me that the domain is still pointing to the yahoo servers and that’s why you see the under construction thing. You own the domain, yahoo was just hosting it and now you, essentially, want wordpress to host it. So yes, you have to change the nameservers to wordpress.
@jimbok – your domain mapping is active. WordPress strips out the www part. I see your blog here http://groomingeeks.com/

@vivianpaige: Thanks! Just checked this morning and everything seems fine now. Another thing though, is it possible to include the “www” infront of my URL?

jimbok,
WordPress.com automatically redirects the ‘www’ version of your site to groomingeeks.com – you can link to either and it will work. It’s active now – the issue before was probably just a DNS propagation delay (it can take a few hours or so before nameserver changes start to work).
