Yet another question about star symbols
-
Hi
I have been reading the threads about star symbols and I noticed that quite a few suggested the following:
solid star: ★ & # 9733 ;
star outline ☆ & # 9734 ;I copied and pasted the star ★ and ☆ into the ‘Visual’ mode of text, without putting & # 9733 or & # 9734 in the HTML mode. It works fine with my computer at home but with my computer at work, they only appear as hallow rectangles. No idea why? ( I read somewhere on the forum it could be due to the graphic card?)
I would like to put & # 9733 or & # 9734 in the HTML mode now to see if it works. Do I need to put anything like < > or { } in there to highlight them? I tried just copying and pasting but it just displays as it is without turning into stars.
It is a stupid question really but if you can help, I would be very grateful.
Thanks.

Hi. Verify your encoding settings on your browser. It’s usually in the “View” menu. Most special symbols will appear only if the UTF-8 (Unicode) setting is selected.
If that doesn’t help, I’ll let another volunteer provide their ideas.

thanks guys for your tips.
i’ll have made some adjustments in one post and i’ll adjust the browser setting tomorrow at work to see if it works.

On certain platforms (many Mobile) the characters may also not show up properly, so keep that in mind. :)
Also, Search Engines may not always Index that post correctly, if at all with some characters/symbols.

I just checked with my computer at work. Even though the ‘View’ is UTF-8 (unicode), and I have used a full code as suggestd by http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/01/29/special-characters-symbols-html-entities/, but it still displays vertical rectangles.
With advice from ptrplease, perhaps i should consider using images instead.
Do images always work?
