    When the time came for your domain renewal, the card associated with it had expired. As a result, we weren’t able to process the renewal, which led to your domain expiring. Once a domain expires, it enters what we call a “redemption phase”. During this phase, the domain is reserved for a certain period, allowing the original owner (in this case, you) an opportunity to reclaim it.

    However, to restore a domain that’s in redemption, our domain registrar charges a fee. This is the “late fee” you’ve noticed on your bill. It’s important to note that this fee isn’t something WordPress.com imposes directly, but rather it’s a charge from our domain registrar.
