You do not own that identity
-
I am trying to comment on a friends blog, but it won’t let me because WP.com doesn’t recognize my ID. I get a message saying I need to log in to WP.com first, which I do, and then it says to click to continue posting my comment and instead of posting my comment I get a “You do not won that identity” error.
I can log in to WP.com, and have created a dummy blog, which I’m not using, to see if that made a difference, but nothing.
What is going on? Any ideas? What do I need to do to be able to post on other people’s blogs? And, if possible, have my ID when I do post, link back to my blog?
Any ideas? HELP!

To get your username to link to your blog, go to users > your profile in your dashboard and under “contact info” change the URL in the “website” field to the URL for your blog.
We need a link to the blog you are trying to comment on.
-
Thanks thesacredpath, I hope that part will “fill in” if I can get the “You do not own that identity” error fixed.
Any ideas on that?

We need a link to the blog. We do not even know for sure that it is a wordpress.COM blog. If it is a self-hosted wordpress blog hosted on a third-party hosting service, your password and username from here will not work. There is no connection between blogs here and self-hosted blogs. Self-hosted blogs stand alone.
-
It was a WP.com blog, but has moved to self-hosting. (Please don’t say that means you can’t/won’t help.)
Regardless of where it is hosted, I still own the WP.com ID, right? So it shouldn’t be giving me that error message, right? What does that message even mean?
Alternately, are there other options for being able to post comments on my friends blogs and still be able to link to mine with the username?
Thanks for your help.

The wordpress.com username/password will not work with a self-hosted blog. There is no connection between wordpress.COM and self-hosted blogs.
You need to register at the site for a username and ID. Typically there will be a link in the sidebar to register. Once you are registered, when you sign in an comment, put in your blog address and then wordpress will put a cookie on your computer and remember those choices. If you clear your cookies, then you will again have to enter your blog address when commenting.
-
If you give us a link to the blog, we can take a look and help figure out how to register there.

Thanks for your help. Do I need to register with MY blog, or WP.com? I already have a userID at WP.com, and have linked my blog to it, but still if I sign in on WP.com and then go to my friends blog to add my comment, I immediately get the “You do not own that identity.”
By the way, the blog is http://www.outdrivingmyheadlights.com.
Thanks again.

@dianewb, that blog, http://www.outdrivingmyheadlights.com , is NOT a wordpress.COM blog, so your username and password from wordpress.COM will not work with it. As I said, there is NO connection between wordpress.COM and self-hosted wordpress blogs. They are completely separate.
I need the link to your FRIEND’S blog.
-
If http://www.outdrivingmyheadlights.com./ is your friend’s blog, you will need to Register there. The registration system on that blog is not connected to WordPress.com at all. It appears you may have registered there some time in the past and now have forgotten the password; check your files. It may also be that you have not yet registered. Try it.
-
Interesting that the avatar for the OP here is the same as that showing in the sidebar at http://www.outdrivingmyheadlights.com/ . That is confusing.
-
Sorry for the confusion. The blog outdrivingmyheadlights.com IS me. My friends blog is coach4results.blogspot.com.
Last night she changed it to be Name/URL, but there are others that haven’t changed and I still get the you do not own that identity error. One, for example is http://lunchladytomba.blogspot.com.
Where do I need to register in order to not get that error? As I said, I have my id at WP.com, and it is linked to my outdrivingmyheadlights.com blog, but I still get that error.
Any ideas? Thanks for all of your help on this.

You can’t log into a blogspot blog with a wordpress.COM username and password. They are not connected. WordPress is wordpress, and blogspot is Google.
You can use “open ID” which is supported here and at blogspot to log into blogspot blogs though: http://support.wordpress.com/settings/openid/ .
If you have an account with Google for Webmaster tools, or for a gmail account, you can use those logins for commenting on blogspot blogs also.

I was going to look at the blogspot blog, but apparently blogspot is down right now for some reason or another and I get the generic blogspot “status” page.
