You have to be kidding me. My account is getting suspended?

  • Unknown's avatar

Lloyd is a staff member. He came on during Podz’ vacation.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yeah, I had a blog comment from skippy saying some guy calling himself ‘Lloyd’ had emailed him a few weeks ago from a Gmail account, claiming to be a new secret staff member who couldn’t reveal himself because he still had another job.

The whole thing is extremely odd and sounds pretty unprofessional, but at least Podz is handling it now.

He’s on the forums here as foolswisdom.

  • Unknown's avatar

@jaytomio If you do a search on adsense/affiliate links in the forum the issue of ads and affilate links was discussed at great length.

  • Unknown's avatar

    This is my opinion.

    (1) The policy is clear. See the pink sticky at the head of the forum and the FAQs and the ToS.
    (2) There are forum threads on this subject and there has been a great deal of discussion on the forum on the same matter.
    (3) jaytomio is no newbie having been a member for 8 months.
    (4) jaytomio is a businessperson in the book trade. There is an appropriate way of dealing with business matters such as the notice that was received and that is not by posting to this forum. Approaching the forum instead of simply removing the links IMO demonstrates DEFIANCE and illustrates a determination MANIPULATE an outcome. If the same amount of time and energy had been put into removing the links and apologizing I might feel some latitude regarding the timeframe for compliance would be in order.
    (5) In addition to the animated flashing green Amazon advertisement in the sidebar, every book image on the blog appears to be linked to commercial advertisements for online purchases. And the blog is full of them.
    (6) The same books that are being linked by jaytomio can be borrowed from a public library or purchased from a local bookstore. Everyone knows this. However, by linking the images to online outfits that are in the business of selling products jaytomio knowingly and willfully violated the ToS.
    (7) There is no grounds for jaytomio to “negotiate” on. The links must be removed and if they aren’t the blog must be closed.

On a personal note to the offender I say this with single pointed clarity: I do not believe that I have witnessed bodhisattva behaviour, I have witnessed a snit fit that is the evidence of double-mindedness.

Tt, I have got to disagree with you. He was upset, and he posted in haste. Let’s cut the guy some slack; he has shown willingness to come in line with the policy and work things out behind the scenes as requested.

This issue has come up repeatedly because it is a hot button. The forums are for discussion of such issues. I see nothing wrong with posting an issue like this, particularly when they’ve already apologized, only for making someone feel bad for using the forum.

jaytomio last posted to this thread half a week ago. It’s time to let it go.

  • Unknown's avatar

Jaytomio and myself have discussed this and it has been resolved.
    We are all happy :)

  • Unknown's avatar

There is still advertising on his site Podz and I am not happy!
Rules are not made to be broken.

As he or she dragged the rest of the wordpress community into this on the forum and as you responded on the forum I guess we’ll be be getting an explanation as to the specifics so we can take advantage of the advertising opportunities we were hitherto unaware of, eh?

  • Unknown's avatar

As I said, we are happy.

  • Unknown's avatar

What were the specifics of the happiness arrangement, please?

  • Unknown's avatar

That is betwen myself and jaytomio.

Question: Do you want me to interpret the ToS and add to it so that I can set it in stone and strictly enforce that by deleting all transgressors on sight, or would you rather I looked at each case individually within the framework we have. Be advised that your answer could be applied to you too should someone complain.

You also do not know if jaytomio has rec’d his email or had time to act.

I am NOT discussing email – which are confidential – with anyone but the person concerned.

  • Unknown's avatar

Do you want me to interpret the ToS and add to it so that I can set it in stone and strictly enforce that by deleting all transgressors on sight[…]?

Before anyone says ‘yes’, remember that it’s not actually an option. If Podz went ahead and deleted scobleizer.wordpress.com and webworkerdaily he would probably get fired ;)

The original poster has already expressed regret for posting about this on the forums and shown his willingness to remove the links if they are indeed against policy. As I read it, his problem was not so much with being told to remove problematic content, it was with being threatened with suspension and not knowing whether the threat was genuine and serious.

If he has now been declared Special, good for him; nice to know you don’t have to be a personal acquaintance of Matt to qualify. If he has accepted his non-Specialness, that’s good too. Either way, it’s been resolved.

  • Unknown's avatar

Quick aside if jaytomio is still reading this thread.

is a broken link. Tripod doesn’t allow hotlinking into other sites.

My issue that I wish we could get resolved is if affliate links are or are not allowed. There seems to be some confusion among staff on the issue. I know in the past I had mentioned that they were while using the example of a CD review site that had actual content with a link at the end. I think jaytomio’s blog is another example of this where we see actual written reviews that do include a link. I, for one, don’t have any issue with a site like this.

Last offical thing I’ve heard offically though was “No adverts period.”

Not trying to give anyone a hard time on the subject. Just seems like I’m the one who gets to answer the “What’s allowed and what’s not” question here in the forums whele Podz gets to answer it via feedback. I just wish we were on the same page. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

If the total number of affiliate links are few and incidental to the blog then there is a better chance little will happen.

It would be a breach of privacy to discuss emails I have sent.

I try damn hard to look at everything as fairly as I can and am prepared to work with genuine bloggers who have made a genuine mistake.
And I cheerfully remove every splog I see without any hesitation.

That’s as clear as I can make it.

Any doubt at all – ASK.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @ Podz,
Please notice this. When you said: “That’s bewteen me and jaytomio,” I said no more. It was your job to make the call and you made it. When I saw that the flashing green Amazon 30% off advertisement had been removed from the sidebar I was satified that the matter had been properly concluded.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Pandora’s box remains open I see…

“Last offical thing I’ve heard offically though was “No adverts period.”

Yes. Except for some people, the qualification of whom is secret (apart from the fact that they are Special in some way) and will probably never ever be known to the plebs.

It’s still one rule for some and another for others. That much is clear.

Yeah, seen it responded.Don’t want ads, don’t want my readers bothered by ads, would pay to keep them off. That thread has nothing to do with this thread though, in fact it’s completely different. It’s more of a “what do you think?” to my mind – at least that’s how people are responding to it.

Edit – I responded – but just checked and my comment is nowhere to be seen on the thread. Maybe it’s being moderated.

  • Unknown's avatar

@dr mike… when you get the questions, as you undoubtedly will, why not simply refer them all to Podz for the behind-the-scenes feed back resolution? Sorted.

And that way you aren’t placed in the unenviable position of having to answer all those “what’s permitted” questions over and over again.:)

  • Unknown's avatar

    @britgirl
You have said that in your opinion Matt’s thread has nothing to do with this one. I do beg to differ with you. Perhaps the connection is subtle but I do believe it is there.

I believe that Matt’s posting contains information that clarifies why the policy on ads is not well, clear. Moreover, from what I apprehend, and I could of course be wrong, there is no written in stone policy because each and every situation requires a discretionary call to be made by staff.

Indeed what I intend to do when working the forum in the future is to refer any and all queries pertaining to blog advertising directly to Podz via feedback so he can make the call. I also intend to remind everyone else answering questions on the forum to take the same tack so we are not confusing the issue any further.
