when did wordpress automatically add advertisements to blogs? When did this change happen, and why was it without notifiing the blog owners?

You should have read the terms of service. This did not suddenly happen, it’s been this way for years.

About six years, if memory serves. And it is in the Terms of Service that you agreed to when you started blogging here, so you did give permission.

Ah, but wait…there are also numerous browser plug ins that have been adding ads to people’s blogs. Make sure it isn’t one of those.
