You Tube – no cookies url

    Hi,

We are a small NGO and have planned to launch our website on 1st of March. We have a personal plan and we want to embed YouTube videos on our site. However, due to the GDPR data protection law in Europe, we have to embed the privacy enhanced youtube no cookie url instead of the regular one. This url is not recognized by WordPress.com and just shows the link not a preview of the video.

Has someone any idea how to solve this problem? I know that at WordPress.org they have developed a plugin. But that obviously doesn’t help me at wordpress.com.

Unfortunately, we are on a schedule. I contacted support but after a week, I have not received a reply yet and we are scheduled to go live with the website on 1st of March.

  • Hi there,

Embeds on WordPress.com depend on a whitelisting system, and only services supporting the oEmbed protocol can be whitelisted.

For Youtube we only have the youtube.com and youtu.be domains whitelisted, not youtube-nocookie.com.

I can put in a request that support for that domain is added, but I can’t tell you if or when that might be, and cannot make any guarantee that it would be done before your launch date. I’m not even sure if that domain is supported in Youtube’s oEmbed implementation on their end, which it would have to be before any change we make on our end would take effect.

Thank you for your reply. It would be great if you could put in a request. As I learned from WordPress.org, there is apparently a problem with Jetpack interfering, which I obviously can’t change on wordpress.com. I just wonder why there are no questions at all about this topic on this forum. Has no one else experienced this problem in the past?

  • I did some more digging and it turns out this is actually a change that will have to be made in the Core WordPress software on WordPress.org. There’s already a ticket open for it on their end, but until it’s implemented there, there’s nothing else we can do on this end.
