Dear WordPress,
I have used WordPress for more than a decade and am greatly pleased with it.
I am therefore all the more speechless at WordPress’s decision to deplatform conservativetreehouse.com.
Wordpress states that there is an ‘incompatibility between the site’s content and terms.’ Which of these content categories does the site violate?
– Illegal content and conduct.
– Intellectual property infringement.
– Pornography.
– Gambling.
– Technologically harmful content.
– Impersonation.
– Calls to violence.
– Posting private information.
– Advertising.
– Hotlinking to WordPress.com.
– Spam or machine-generated content.What terms have they violated? What is incompatible?
You say, ‘WordPress.com strongly believes in freedom of speech.’
I find this hard to believe. Unless there is some clear and dispassionate reason for your deplatforming of that site, WordPress is acting with cowardice.
I hope if you are reading this and are a newer employee or middle management, you will move this note up the chain. I also hope for you, personally, that you will speak up for those who are now being silenced. That goes for people across the political spectrum. There have always been people whose voices have been silenced–typically minorities, women, and whose sexualities don’t align with the mainstream. Now you are siding with those in power who are silencing people with certain political views. Among those being silenced now are also, surprisingly, minorities, women, and gay and lesbian conservatives.
On behalf of ALL of us, not just the website you are deplatforming, please reconsider your action. ‘Freedom of speech’ sometimes means moving out of one’s comfort zone and staying there.
