“your domain is using external name servers…”

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m looking to add new CNAMEs but on the DNS records page I have the message: “Your domain is using external name servers so the DNS records you’re editing won’t be in effect until you switch to use WordPress.com name servers. Update your name servers now.”

There don’t seem to be any human support people active right now, so I’m curious if any of you have experience with what this means. What does updating the name servers do and will the update mess up the company website?

    Hi @marketingrhodes,

Thanks for the update! Since you’ve resolved the issue, there’s no further action needed.

For future reference, that message appears because your domain is using external name servers. Any DNS records you add via WordPress.com will not take effect. You’ll need to add DNS records at the provider your domain is currently pointing to. If you want to manage DNS records through WordPress.com, you’ll need to update the domain’s name servers to point to WordPress.com.
