  I need a resource to help me understand how wordpress differs from and works with plugins and themes in general. I seek knowledge of the big picture in order to know how to seek answers to specific needs

  This is WordPress.com. Many users here have free sites that they can set up in minutes and don’t need to bother with the inner workings of their sites. To use a site here at a more advanced level, such as adding plugins, would require a Business plan.
