'You're invited to register your .blog now.' e-mail

    Hello, WordPress staff.

So today I received the register to my .blog domain, and of course I tried to change it. It said I could do it for free, but for some reason it says I can’t and I have to pay for it.

What happened? I can’t understand why I can’t change my domain.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’m not a staff member – just a volunteer, but I’m curious: where exactly did you see that .blog domain names were free? Because as far as I know, it’s not free and it never was.

.blog Domains Are Now Available to Everyone!

Whenever I go to the domain tab, it says the .blog domain is “free with my plan”, in green text, so I assume I could just get it for free?
I know the domain should cost 8.00 a year, but yeah it said it was free with my plan, so I’m in doubt now.

I don’t know if I am doing something wrong or anything.

Okay, I think I understand now. You have a plan (WordPress.com Personal, Premium or Business) which includes a custom domain name and are wondering why the system is trying to charge you for a .blog domain name.

I’m tagging this thread “modlook” so that a staff member takes a closer look.

Yes, that’s it! Thanks, now I’ll just need to wait for an answer.

  • The issue is that the WordPress.com user account that you are posting from is not the owner any upgrades.

Typically this happens because you ended up with a second WordPress.com user account at some point and THAT account is the one that was used to purchase the upgrade. You will need to log into that second account in order to use the domain credit included with your plan.

I don’t understand, pardon me. Are you saying my account at some point belonged to someone else?

  • The WordPress.com user account you are posting from is not the owner of any WordPress.com plans. So, if you are getting an email telling you that you can register a .blog domain for free, there are two possible reasons:

    1. That you do own a plan, but you own it through a different WordPress.com user account.

    2. That you somehow get the email by mistake, or something was worded in a way that made it sound like the domain would be free when it is not.

Understood. So I don’t own any domain? How sad.

Well, thanks for the help! Now I can go on blogging normally.
