Youtube embed not working with WP.com

I am unable to play the embed videos once published on the page. It plays in the editor mode but not when I visit the page as a visitor – it turns into a hyperlink sending users to youtube.

  • Hi there,

It looks like this is only on the front page – if I view a single post, for example, https://k154an.wordpress.com/2019/09/30/video-2/, the video embeds fine there.

I think this might be due to your blog page settings. Go to My Site ->Design ->Customize ->Content Options, and set the excerpt option to full post. Does that make any difference to the front page videos?

    Hey kokkieh,

That worked like a charm, you rock!
I am facing same issue with Quora answers to be displayed on my blog – do you happen to have a handy solution for that as well?

  • @k154an can you send an example of where you’re using Quora answers in a post or page? I don’t know that we have a great way to embed those directly here, but you can link to them.

    Hey supernovia,

Here is the example – https://k154an.wordpress.com/2019/10/01/quora-embed/
    Thanks in advance!

  • How exactly did you add that? It looks like you took a HTML block, and then manually added block markup to create a Quora block? If so, that won’t work. In order to embed Quora answers via a block, a Quora block will first have to be created for the editor – you can’t manually make a new type of block from within the editor itself.

The different embed blocks in the editor support services that use oEmbed. That’s how you can embed something by just pasting a link, like Youtube – when you paste the link, we send a request to Youtube, and they return us the content to embed. It’s easy, and it’s safe, as it doesn’t require adding any code to your site that could be modified for malicious reasons.

Quora does not support oEmbed, though, so Quora posts simply cannot be embedded this way. I looked on Quora itself, and also don’t see any other way to embed answers – if you click the options menu on an answer there’s no embed option that gives an embed code to be used on external sites, so it’s safe to say it’s not possible to embed Quora answers because Quora themselves don’t offer a way to do this.
