YouTube error on my blog

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve added my youtube videos to my blog following the FAQ instructions on how to use youtube on wordpress (i.e. I’m using my videos’ urls instead of trying to embed them).

Now when I go to my blog, the videos are on there, but when I click on play, I get this error message: “We’re sorry, this video is no longer available.”

What’s going on? Is it because I’ve set my youtube videos to private so only my friends can view it? Before I did this, I checked in the youtube instructions and it says that this will still work as long as my friends have been added to my youtube account. Do I have to add myself?

    Thanks!

That video got taken down, either by the owner or by Youtube. It’s very common; the #1 maintenance task on my blog is playing whack-a-mole with YouTube videos.

    Oh, duh. Correction:

Your YouTube videos are set to Private. When they’re set to Private, nobody can view them on a blog; they have to go to your YouTube page.

IE: your friends can view them on YouTube: they cannot view them on your blog.

That will teach me to read half of a question before answering it!

I play with private videos on my blogs often. They will show up, but will get stuck on a “black page” or “loading” if you are not logged into YouTube when you try and view them. Once you are logged into YouTube and come back with the credentials to view the video (yourself or others you allow), they can see the videos on your site.

The only way that they don’t work (as raincoaster mentions) is if they are set to “not embed”, but that will give you an error saying the user doesn’t allow external embedding, a completely different error!

    Hope that helps.

Ugh. Thanks guys. This is really frustrating! I feel like the instructions on youtube are contradicting because when I try them they’re not working. Or am I reading these incorrectly? Here’s what I’ve found:

Can I embed or share a private video?

Yes. You can embed a private video on your website by copying the embed code on the “Edit Video” page for that video and pasting it into your website. To share it, just click the “Share Video” link under the video while you’re watching it, and send it to whomever you like.

In order to view the video, the person coming to your website must be logged into YouTube, and be part of the list with which you shared the video (i.e. Friends or Family). If they are not, the video will not load.

Who can see my private video?

When you make a video private, you have the option of sharing it with a select number of people from any of the lists you’ve created (you have two default lists, “Friends” and “Family”). If you don’t select a list, your private video can only be viewed by your account. If you share it with members on a list, it will only be viewable by those select members on that list.

Why can’t my friends see my private video?

Private videos and playlists can be viewed only by you and the people you’ve added to designated contact lists. In order for one of your friends to see one of your private videos, you have to share the video or playlist with the contact list they’re on. When you share private videos, you may want to make sure you check all the boxes in your address book so all the intended recipients can see them.

How do I make my video private?

If you’d like to make sure your video(s) are seen only by the people you hand-pick, you should set your video to “Private”. Here’s how:

Log in and go to “My Videos” (http://youtube.com/my_videos).
Click the “Edit Video Info” button beside the video in question.
Scroll down to the Broadcast section and select the “Private” option.
Be sure to then select the specific contact list you want to see the video.
If a list is too large, select the individuals with whom you’d like to share the video.
When using lists, always double-check to be sure the contact list you select includes only the people you want to see that video. Check your Contact Lists (http://youtube.com/my_friends).
Click the “Update Video Info” button.
