YouTube playlist widget?

  • Unknown's avatar

Is there a widget available that would allow me to publish a right-column link to a YouTube playlist? Or some other way to host a permalink to such a playlist at the navigation level?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

We don’t have a YouTube widget, but you can publish a YouTube playlist with the shortcode mentioned here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/videos/youtube/#embedding-a-playlist

For example, here is the YouTube shortcode for the playlist on that page:

    [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaNH56Vpg-A&list=RD02Kl3UR74jsk0]

You can replace the URL in that shortcode with your playlist’s URL. If you want the playlist to appear in your sidebar, you can then paste the YouTube shortcode into a Text Widget.

Please let me know if you’d like any further help with that!

Thanks. I saw the embed code in the help section, but couldn’t figure out how to get it into the right hand column! Your advice about a text widget makes sense. I’ll fool around with that a bit.

    Again, thanks so much.

You’re very welcome! If you run into any trouble with either the embed code or the text widget, please let me know and I’ll be happy to help with it. :)

I’ve created the widget for the right hand column. What I was hoping for was simply a link that would launch the playlist full size on a new page. What I got was a window crammed into the narrow right hand column, which makes sense, I guess.

Any way to use the right hand column to launch the playlist elsewhere?

    Hi there,

Sorry, I misunderstood! I thought you wanted to embed the playlist, but I see now that you wanted just a link to the playlist. That’s definitely possible. :)

You can still use the text widget, but instead of putting the embed code in there, you can put in the HTML code for a link. We have a short guide to creating HTML links to put into text widgets here: Text Widget Links

Basically, you can use the post editor to create a link for you. Be sure to check the box next to “Open link in a new window/tab” when you create the link — that way the playlist will be launched on a new page.

Then, you can switch to the Text post editor (using the tab in the upper right of the editor box) and copy the HTML code for the link. Paste that into your text widget, and you’ll have a link to the playlist! :)

Let me know if you have any questions about that.
