YouTube URL no longer working in video widget

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there,

For several months, I’ve used the video widget on my blog: https://uppcgrouplife.wordpress.com/

Now, no youtube URL I enter works, such as: https://youtu.be/68TlQCLdo0w

    Any help?

    Thanks,
    Mike

  • Hello Mike,

This is a bug, and we’re working on it, but for now please use a text widget instead. If you add a text widget, and paste the video URL on its own line in the widget, it should embed the video the same way it works on a post.

I cannot embed a TED Talk on my blog. The instructions given in another post (https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/embed-video-not-working-3/) are like a broken record, continually referring to a WordPress support article that has out of date information that no longer applies to TED Talk videos (there’s no “</>” symbol below the video, it’s now an arrow overlay on the screen, and there’s no WordPress shortcode given). And the tip given above, in this thread, is not a real explanation at all. I just want to post the TED Talk link in my blog. What text widget could you possibly be talking about? It’s not like there’s just one, right? Don’t we need more information than this? Why can’t I just take the embed code as given on the TED Talk and paste it into my blog?
    Life is short!

First, please don’t post into old threads started by other users on a completely unrelated issue.

Second, the forum thread you’re referencing is over a year old – information in older threads are often out of date.

It appears TED has changed how this works on their end. We don’t get notified by other services every time they change things on their end, and we rely on reports from WordPress.com users if things like this change.

It appears TED no longer offers a WordPress shortcode, but you can embed the video on your site by clicking the Share icon and copying the direct link for the video, NOT the embed code. Paste that link directly on to its own line in a post, page or text widget, and it should embed automatically.

I’ll make sure the support page is updated accordingly.

And the tip given above, in this thread, is not a real explanation at all.

My previous answer in this thread is regarding embedding Youtube videos via the video widget, and has nothing at all to do with embedding TED videos in a post or a page.

What text widget could you possibly be talking about?

A text widget is one of the types of widgets you can use to add content to your theme’s widget areas.

Just an update that this should be fixed now, so you should again be able to add a Youtube video to the video widget itself.
