YouTube Video Thumbnail Cut Off on Sides

I’m attempting to embed a YouTube video into my website (mboringc.wordpress.com) on the home page. All is well and good, except that it looks like crap because WordPress is cutting the left and right edges off.

I’ve tried embedding the video with and without the YouTube shortcode. I’ve also attempted to resize the video using the YouTube shortcode (e.g. [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkemlGMUuF4&w=640&h=385 ]) to no avail.

I’ve changed the numbers to much smaller numbers and regardless of what I do, the video won’t resize.

Can someone please help me get the entire YouTube thumbnail to show up?

The blog I need help with is NOT trulyboring.wordpress.com.

    It is http://mboringc.wordpress.com

Hi, I believe I have resolved the issue. I’m not sure why the resizing wasn’t working for me. Perhaps I made some error. Now it seems to be working. I’ve resized the video to 896×504 (matches 1280×720). Shoreditch is 900 pixels wide so works out about right. It also seems to resize nicely on smaller screens so I think this should work. But I’d rather not have to give a set width like so.

  • Hi there,

I’m glad you got this working. I’m not able to reproduce the cropping issue you describe, however, using either the link you shared here or the one I got directly from Youtube.

That shouldn’t happen to start with,so if it happens again, please don’t fix it and let me know so I can take a look.

It’s quite easy to replicate. I simply paste the video url into a page and the resulting image is cropped. See it at the following link.

    test page

Compare it to the video embed on the home page where I use the following shortcode:

    [youtube https://youtu.be/SkemlGMUuF4&w=896&h=504 ]

  • Ah, okay. I had tested it on a post, not a page, but even then it took some digging to figure it out.

It appears that if the theme resizes the video player, as is the case with the full-width template you’re using on your pages, this cropping issue happens. I was able to confirm it on several more themes, and with other videos than the one you’re using.

I’m pretty sure that shouldn’t happen, and I’ve reported it to our developers. It’s a bit of and edge case, though, so it might not be a priority fix, so for now please continue using the size query parameters if you add new videos.
